Shaking hands — I've grown used to the feeling over the past few days. No matter how much Saffron tries to coax the fear out of me, I still feel it in my bones, ripples of an earthquake that I know will never cease. My terror will not simply disappear; it is a dark force that stays with me, follows me as if it has become my shadow.
It is my seventh night in the Capitol — I have been keeping track of time more often, counting down the days I have left. (It will never enough time.) My feet shuffle rhythmically against the floor as my eyes move back and forth from the untouched food on the table to my empty porcelain plate.
Mace has appeared in the doorway, holding baby Quinn in his arms. Quinn — another thing that Snow can touch.
Maybe if I die it will be enough — Snow will be satisfied and will leave my family alone. (Unlikely.) If I could have my death be my own in the Arena, I would have it be a sacrifice. For Clementa, for Kiara, for Paige, for Quinn.
"Would you like to join me?" I ask him. My gaze rests on Saffron and Mace's new daughter, Quinn — my cousin. I smile at her, but it is a broken gesture, because a voice in my heads screams that I will likely not see her grow up. I may never get the chance to put flowers in her hair, to pick out Ratmas gifts for her, or teach her how to ride a horse. They were moments I had fabricated in my mind, things I once thought could become a reality — and now they never would.
I smile through the pain. "There's cake," I tempt him with one of his favorite foods.
