Midnight madness kept me awake that night. Heartbeat to remind me I was alive, last name to remind me I was safe— for now. A quiet night, pardon the sounds of my fists against a punching bag and the murmurs from the television.

"Aren't we all just terrified?" Caesar Flickerman's voice asked with too much cheer to hold any weight. "Smart observation, Genius." I hissed between swings. That was sort of the point of tyrannical governments, no? "So many angelic tributes this year!"

Wings wouldn't help a person in this situation; they never did. They were all thrown into a birdcage and only one ever got to fly away. Angelic. Eden was angelic. Eden was a lot of things that should have meant something but didn't. More punches.

"We hate to lose them," I heard Caesar say, before finally clicking the TV off. Enough lies for one night, I supposed. I wondered what she was doing at that very moment. Certainly not sleeping, for as long as I had known her she had been sneaking through windows and sneaking into bars and dragging boys into places they shouldn't have been in— and I was a frequent victim. Maybe she was finding some haunted tree stump or beating peacekeepers in poker.

I felt myself smiling slightly at the thought of Paige's red hair among the white uniforms and those cunning eyes of hers.

I wiped away a line of sweat from my brow, taking a seat on the floor in the center of the meeting room. These rooms were always so big, I had noticed. Too big for their only uses to be Training Score reveals and Kieran Emberstatt's insomnia. I propped my feet up against the wall, my hands behind my head.

A line of light to break the darkness, and Emberly Lowe was standing in front of me.

"Can't sleep either?" I asked.

"Breaking things usually helps."
