"Mama, are the pretty dresses on the screen again?" Elise perked up as she heard the infamous theme song. From a young age, she had been enamored by the dresses lined on chariots & the elegance and beauty of the interviews, all designed by the best that the Capitol had to offer. The true evil and meaning of the games had all but been lost to her at a young age.

Smack.

"What did I say about watching that?"

The voice was harsh. Cold. Elise looked up at her mother, watching as her eyes filled with rage, anger, fury. Her slender body cowered even further into the corner, as low as the space would allow. She wasn't ready for another.

Elise would never forget her past. Sure, there were better parents in the world, but there were surely worse as well. A little bit of discipline never hurt anyone. Though her mother advised against watching the games, Elise always snuck a glimpse at the opening ceremony and the interviews. She wasn't going to miss a chance to see glorious fabrics, colors, and designs in action. Each movement, the way the dress fell, the draping, the pleating. Elise loved every aspect of clothing.

But not District 8's clothing.

She felt oppressed in eight. As though, her artistic endeavors were consistently stifled. All she wanted to do was imagine, create, design. There was no chance that she could ever do such a thing in this place. All Elise wanted to do was escape. Get out of this town and leave. Find a way to the Capitol. Do anything to experience the lavishness and extravagance that the Capitol had to offer.

But Elise was not stupid.

There was very little chance that it would happen. Elise was aware of that. It was her dream, her goal, her desire. If there was an inkling that it could happen, she'd jump on the opportunity in a heartbeat. Like a moth to a flame, she'd be there. However - she was fully aware of the intensity of this aspiration and knew that it would be nearly impossible. So she continued her life in eight, trying to find something else that gave her any life.

But nothing did.

Her family wasn't well off by any means, but Elise and her older brother survived. Their parents made enough to put food on the table, even if it was barely enough to keep them satisfied. Her brother was protective, not too much so, but certainly worried that something would happen to Elise, so he stepped between her and conflict. She enjoyed the protection, but something about it made Elise feel as though nobody deemed her as good enough for herself.

But she did not act.

Elise continued living her life as though she had no end-goal. Rather, at this point, she didn't. She had a far off dream that was pointless in working towards because it'd never happen. Who ever heard of a little district eight girl going on to be a designer in the Capitol? It was nothing short of a fairytale. Elise was aware. She felt herself going through the motions.

But Elise made no effort to stop the motions.

Cold-hearted, some might say to describe Elise. Others might say apathetic. It's up to you, though, because she's certainly both. Hardened to the discipline of her mother, Elise is stoic. She won't make anything out of the ordinary when in public. Don't want to be an embarrassment, she'd think to herself, mocking the high-pitched voice of her mother. She doesn't particularly care how your day is going and won't ask.

But she does just fine.

Her schoolwork is satisfactory. Elise's friends are existent, but few and far between. Nobody would call her a protege in school, for she doesn't try very hard. What's the point? I don't have anything to work towards. It's not like she's a great presence around home. Why? I don't love anyone here. She's just there. A beauty by conventional standards.

But she couldn't be harder on herself.

"Too many freckles. The bags beneath your eyes are dark and puffy. Could you see any more of your bones? Too short. Your fingernails are always broken and cuticles are torn and bleeding. Your hair is stringy, dirty, and frankly needs work." would be just a glimpse of what she'd say to herself in the mirror - if, well, she had a mirror.

But she wasn't just hard on her appearance.

Step into Elise's room for just a moment. It's a transformation from the girl you see on the surface. Bright drawings litter the floor, the walls, the bed. All she does as she returns from school is walls up in her room, sketching garment after garment. Pinks in one corner, greens in another, enough to fill a whole space. Slam. Is that the front door? You better leave before she sees you.

Because she'd never let anyone know she draws.

Even as her parents try and enter her room, she throws everything under the bed, out of sight. She knew that it was pointless to try and be what she wanted and didn't want to deal with the criticism of her mother again. Sure, she loved the drawings, but it was a fantasy away from reality. Her fantasy away from her reality.
