She lived on a ship. Frankly, Koi wasn’t astonished. It explained why her palms were three times thicker than his, and why she always looked like she’d just got back from a bad storm.

Rubbing the back of his neck, he laughed quietly. “Only about twenty,” he joked. “Just make sure you get some sleep. And eat something, drink some water, you seemed really dehydrated back there.” He hoped that dehydration and low blood sugar were the actual reasons her eyes had looked unfocused, rather than something worse.

Koi felt another wave of concern for Evelyn, and there was an urge to reach out and touch her arm or shoulder, just so she knew it, but his arms still hung limp at his sides. It was silly anyways. Right now, as he stood only a foot apart from her, Koi towered over Evelyn. But he wouldn’t dare to say she seemed small.

”If anything gets worse, come find me, okay? I live really close to the beach where we first met—in the group of houses that has the fountain in the middle. There’s a sign out front that says Dr. Wallace on it, that’s my Dad.”

The sun was beginning to dip over the edge of the water, turning the sky a fiery red. Though he was no sailor, Koi knew there would be no storm tonight. Maybe Evelyn would sleep better knowing that too.

”I should be getting home. Get better soon,” Koi said. ”Stay out of trouble, will you?” He knew the answer would be a maybe, but he smiled, winked, turned around, and headed home.
