A R E T O

Mother Nature was my first love.

Salt spray and humid air, curly dark hair sticking to the back of sun kissed necks. Dirt under blunt fingernails and a garden overflowing, stitching up sisters and kissing their wounds better. Tiny flowers woven into the walls and herbs hung from ceiling planks to dry, there are deceptively pretty oleander bushes out back that can't be touched by bare skin.

Life and death walk hand in hand here but my mother taught me how to toe the line between them. Daisy petals and rosemary sprigs, poisonous hemlock and nightshade berries, crush them together and no one's the wiser.

I've never been a fighter, never one to jump first into the fray. Hanging back as protector, a guardian, the wooden curve of a bow in my calloused grip, arrowheads coated in oleander and wolfsbane.

They don't all know that girls bite back.

Dark eyes and freckle scatterings, stretch marks jagged like the blade slashes that fuel our fires. Aloe for acne scars and elder flowers for dry hair, the young ones always come running for the newest remedies.

Salves for burns and scraps and heartbreaks.

My second love was from the mainland. Stark and contrasting to everything I was born into. She was part of the night life, part of manufactured poisons and parties, trying to ease me into her world but I had just stood in the corner and didn't know what to do with myself.

Nothing grows there except the hidden hate that the people harbour for each other. Everything tastes like sulfur and concrete and pollution, hanging in the air like a thick fog. I had wished for the open air of the island more than I wished to struggle for her.

Heartbreak must run in the family.
