I hated home, I hated the faces it held captive and I hated my heart for breaking even though letting go was for the best.

No goodbyes, only a slammed door and a tired, old rucksack full of broken promises. Sharp, I'd be forced to round out the edges myself to stop the pain from lingering.

In the past, I was just like her. Heart set on the bad things; I fell in love with the madness written into this District's narrative. My parents didn't help, they offered words of will as medicine. I'd swallow them whole, build myself up and become their 'buttercup' but the facade could only last so long. It was a temporary fix to a permanent problem and I had had enough. Lux was the same but she never stood up, she never told them.

I did.

Blood is thicker than water but in that moment, my blood was liquid gold and was glistening with possibilities and opportunities. The one way street that led to being a career was breaking, finally. Until dreams had to dodge my parents' bullets---eventually, there was an ocean of awkward silence between us and I was thrown out, destined to drown.

I kept my head above water, though. I learnt a thousand things during that time: of independence, sincerity, loyalty. I learnt how to be confident but considerate.

The orphanage was built on broken things but I didn't mind, I had freedom. Lux was missing, though, and in the mirror, I saw my mother's stern brow but her half smile.

I still remember how there were no goodbyes, only prisoner eyes that wanted to follow in my footsteps.

I wish she said something like I did.
