I never enjoyed loud sounds. Usually in six, people were quiet and kept to themselves, but there were days where no one could help but frolic in joy and prosperity. Those were the days where I hid from people. For some reason, I couldn’t bring myself to be in the same room as people who wanted to be social. My mother told me that I needed to come out of the closet and be just as social as they were being, but instead, I told her that I didn’t want to be seen in public with them. I didn’t want to be associated with them. I was not like my parents, and that was probably the scariest part of my life.

My parents were people who brilliant in every sense of the word. They led teams to discovering great things in six. Medical breakthroughs that could cure some of the toughest diseases that Panem had ever faced. Of course, they didn’t tell me much about their work, but I knew enough. My parents were rewarded graciously, and I ignored them for the most part. It wasn’t worth my time. I never could understand what my parents did for the district, but I couldn’t bring myself to care either.

I found solace in books and writing more than anything. I tried my hand at the science that my district was known for, but when you nearly burn down a lab because you added just a smidge too much of a chemical, they don’t really want you anywhere near the stuff. That was fine with me, because it gave me the opportunity to continue on with reading about various things. I learned the ins and outs of the human body, and before I knew it, I was being trained in medicine. My parents were happy enough, but they mostly left me to do what I needed to do. They didn’t care what I was doing as long as I didn’t disturb them in their research.

Sometimes I wished I could have understood what they were doing, but I didn’t care. I didn’t care to be close to my parents mostly because they didn’t let me in. When I would show interest in the research they were working on, they would shun me away because they didn’t think I could handle it. My mother was the worst of them, literally calling me unfortunate to anyone that asks them about me. They would tell people that I would never be able to understand the work they did. It didn’t matter if I was in the room with them or not, my mother stuck to her guns. It upset me at first, but I learned to grow a thick skin because of it. Every time my mother would say something about me, I would spread a nasty rumor about her, because she needed to see what it was like to have someone talk about her like she was the evil one. She was, that was the scary part.

And while I tried to make sense of the world around me, most of the kids I hung around seemed to be more into their studies. By far, I noticed that we had to have been the smartest district, only rivaling the capitol. Most kids here put their studies before anything else, and that included watching the games. I wondered why at first, but I knew that it was because the Capitol always looked in favor of people who could come up with new scientific or medicinal breakthroughs. After all, everything we did would usually go to the capitol to benefit them. It was just the way of life that we had to get used too.

I quite frankly didn’t care. What the capitol wanted was none of my concern. Instead, I found my happiness in helping people get better. I ended up working as a nurse in the hospital in six. I got the opportunity to make sure that people got better, and I usually would oversee them as they fought to stay alive. It was sad when we lost people, but honestly, there was something rewarding about watching people depend on you. That was the joy that I realized I needed in my life, and seeing as my parents didn’t care what I did so as long as I left them alone, I decided that is what I wanted to do for the rest of my days.

For a while, I was stagnant in my job. Happy with what I chose to do, but then they started to add more responsibility. Before I knew it, I was learning how to administer and even diagnose patients with certain types of ailments. At first, I was excited, but once I realized how easily miserable I could make people, I decided that I didn’t want to go down that route. My parents looked at me like I was crazy when I told them. They asked me why I didn’t want to be a doctor, and I looked at them point blank and told them that I didn’t find joy in that. I loved helping people get better, but breaking their hearts was something that I didn’t want to do. They threw me out of the house because they didn’t understand why I would throw away a very respectable profession and for the first time, I was happy.

Of course, I did struggle for a while, but I found a home with my best friend. At first they weren’t sure if this was the best fit for me, but after realizing that I did have a lot to bring to the house hold, they decided that it was okay to let me stay. When I see my parents around the district, I do nothing but look forward. I tell myself that I am happy without them, and while there are times where I do miss them, I realize that I am so much better without them.

Stronger even.
