I threw the bale of hay above my head and watched it sore.  Sometimes I didn’t know my own strength.  It surprised me what I could do with a little extra force.

When I came home one day, I found the door wide open.  I walked inside to see a horrific scene of blood splattered on everything.  However, my parents weren’t anywhere in sight.  I watched the back door creak open, and as much as I didn’t want to follow it, I knew I should.

I walked outside and found two dead chickens strung on a wire.  Heads cut clean off.

My mother was just past them, wiping the blade she used to do it with.

“Why did you do that in the house?”

She wouldn’t make eye contact with me.

Then she told that it was none of my business for now, but she needed help getting out of the house before my father came home.

She told me we could stay with her sister.

“Why?”

She showed me her right eye.

My face dropped.   She told me there was a pig in the back of the farmhouse too.

I asked her how she managed to lift it from here to there.

She told me that a mother could do anything in a dangerous situation.

That’s when I finally started to understand her.
