With enough wealth, one can afford to have six daughters. But you can't buy individuality. That was the problem with the Drayce family; mom and dad wanted the same things from all six daughters. Perfect academics, amazing career marks, and glory for the District. They expected enthusiastic volunteers.

Kaia is enthusiastic, but not about dying.

Despite their striking similarities, the sister craved individuality. Nobody wanted to be compared to another, so they tried their hardest to follow unique paths. Kaia's was acrobatics - learning to bend and stretch her body in ways that nobody could mimic on sight. Upon her inevitable mastery, she never stopped smiling. Rather than wielding a particular weapon, she favored hand-to-hand combat. She learned how to cripple a man before age fifteen, and how to break a neck before age twelve.

Problem was, she didn't actually want to break anybody's neck. It felt like such a waste of talent; how often did District Four win? Not enough to warrant a foolish volunteer. Why waste her own potential? No, her dreams lied elsewhere.

The circus.

Kaia was a free spirit; a joyful girl in a world riddled with distress. Four was all about pride and glory, but she wanted to ignore all of that. She wanted to see life for what it was - fun! And the circus was a fine place to see it. It was fulfilling to entertain the masses and distract them for their mundane lives. A thrill for young Kaia, who would defy her parents' wishes if they ever asked her to sacrifice everything for glory.

Some things are not worth the trouble.
