Its hard living in a place that hope has died.

People tell me to be hopeful, but deep breathing and mantras could only take you so far. My parents told me that happiness didn’t exist in a place like Panem. However, I disagreed. It was just how you chose to live your life.

I decided that I was going to be above everything that happened here in nine. Instead of working in a metal factory, I found a way to express myself in a way that most people would turn away from.

My father had an old trumpet that he used to play when he was a kid. He locked it up because he didn’t want any of us touching it. It was something that he treasured more than his relationship with his children.

However, one day he left the room open and I stumbled across it, framed in a case that looked like it took forever to build. I was a smart kid and figured out how to jimmy it open without much resistance.

When I held the piece of metal in my hands, It felt heavy, however, my hands moved around it like I had known what this was all along.

I put the mouthpiece to my mouth and blew. A noise came out that was rather loud, but also, slightly pleasant. However, my father came to the room right away. He looked at me holding his trumpet and simply shook his head.

Instead of taking it from me, he taught me how to play it.

Watching him play the trumpet was like watching a painter paint. It was beautiful in all regards, and I aspired to be like him one day.

Years passed and I got better. I would ever be as good as my father, but I made due. He was patient with me, all the way until his death.

At his funeral, I played the trumpet for him.

I wanted to throw it into the ground with him, but something stopped me.

A feeling. Him.
