Hi, my name is Cleopatra Valerie, but please, call me Cleo. I'm seventeen and I'm from District Two and you could argue that I'm lucky. In the world we live in today, it's almost a feat to have two living biological parents who love each other almost as much as they love you. So yeah, I'm lucky.

Yes, there were times I felt neglected, but now that I'm older I can see how it can be difficult to divide attention between five kids. There wasn't any room for a golden child in this family.

Family is the most important thing to me, it's shaped me into who I am today and I wouldn't trade any of that for the world. As with all families, there are things you like about them, and things you hate. But hopefully, you love them enough to look past the not-so-great parts.

My mother:
Since I grew up with five brothers and father who was all brute, my mother had a huge responsibility. Mother is already such a huge role to fill, but I brought on an extra part to play. There isn't a bond quite like a mother's to her daughter. There are things I needed to learn, and I didn't have older sisters to do the job for her.

Unfortunately, mother couldn't always be there. If there's one things about my family, it's that we believe in work. We start young, we don't take the day off, and it consumes a lot of our lives. Mother worked at the orphanage, so often times those kids got more nurturing from her than I did. That meant I was forced to learn for myself the things she was meant to teach me.

Don't get me wrong, she wasn't all bad. I went through a stint of bullying in my early teens and it was our long walk through the meadows that kept me strong with a will to survive. I love my mother.

My father:
My father made sure to instill in all of us that the Hunger Games, whether you win or lose, are an honor. Only the best of District Two get to show their faces in the arena, and we should not only want the honor, but fight for it. He taught us that if we were to ever meet a victor, they should be treated with the highest respect. Even if they kill a Valerie. Especially if they kill a Valerie.

Sometime I think my father forgot that I his only daughter, instead of another son, and I thank him for that. He expected us to train every day, with each other. I was small before, and I was expected to fight against my massive brothers. Even if they wanted to take it easy on me, dad would punish them if they did.

He didn't see my black eyes, he saw tokens. The scars that painted my knuckles red were medallions. Pain was a trophy engraved with "I'm not dead". I had to work hard, and I caught up to my brothers. I got bigger and now I can take most of them without a problem. I love my father.

Maximus:
Max is the eldest brother, at 18. He's the only one older than me, so he was most commonly my sparring partner. He was the tallest in our family, with beefy muscles to match.

Max can be kind of a hard ass. He likes to be super over the top when training. He likes to show off. He'll do one handed push-ups, just to show he can. When he spars, he focuses mostly on trash talking his opponent, going for what hurts the most, the heart.

But I always get a laugh when he's the most sore at home.

He always says he's hard on me because he knows I can take it. He's mean to me because he loves me and wants to see me do well. I don't see how exposing my deepest darkest secret to the entire district does that, but it's okay because he didn't realize it was that big of a secret. He supported me through the bullying. I love my brother.

Cayden:
Cayden is the middle child. Honestly, I feel bad complaining about how I felt neglected, dad can hardly remember his name. No wonder Cayden doesn't feel comfortable with him. Only fifteen years old, and Cayden is wiser than our whole family. He cares more about the power of his mind rather than his arms.

I don't mean to say he's weak, none of us are. But he studies with the teachers so he can use his greatest asset. He's the one of us that would be terrified of the Hunger Games. Another reason dad probably hates him.

Cayden is my favorite of my siblings, I trust him. When all my friends turned on me, he was there as my main ground of support. And I've returned the trust. I'm the only one he's told he's gay, and I've been sworn to secrecy. Dad would go ballistic if he knew. Two gay children would be to much for him to handle. I love my brother.

Guy:
Guy is ten minutes older than Jed. They're barely old enough to be reaped, at 12 years old. There's a large gap between the twins and the rest of us, but dad still has them fight with us. They've learned to hold their own.

Guy is missing the part of his brain that keeps him from saying things he shouldn't. Like when he saw me kissing a boy, he told dad. Getting me whipped. Or when he saw me kissing a girl, he told Max. Getting me publicly shamed and ignored by my father for a year.

He didn't know any better. He was just doing what siblings do, tell on each other. Get them grounded. He didn't know he was ruining my life. I love my brother.

Jedrek:
Jed is always in trouble for something. He gets into a lot of fights, but it's never over an argument. He makes bets he can beat people, and he can. He reminds me of Maximus when we were his age.

Actually, he's always right on Max's tail, following him, watching him, becoming him. Max really is a good role model for the most part, except for when he's being a prick during training.

Funny story: one time I was taking Jed to the park. He ran off from me, and I chased him so I couldn't lose him. I was scared he was trying to leave home. After I lost track of him I looked for him for hours before returning home. When I got there, he had told dad that I tried to chase him off because I didn't want him as my brother. Dad still believe him. I was upset about it at first, but in hindsight, it was kind of funny. I love my brother.
