It had been seventeen years since they’d named him August, the month of changes, like they knew he’d get used to things thinning and falling.

Ten years since his mother had died giving birth to Daisy. Two years since their father had died at the mill, his body so mangled by the machinery that his eldest son decided to pray over a closed casket rather than the broken corpse of the strongest man he’d ever known. Two years since he’d placed his feet into unfillable shoes.

He was now seventeen, with sandy curls and brown eyes, an Adam’s apple too big for his neck; a body thinned from under eating but muscled from overworking, shoulders slouched under the weight of his world. Strong-willed like his mother, patient like his father, a silver tongue all his own.

For two years August had handmade everything from window boxes to rocking chairs to sell around the District. Dad had taught him all he knew about woodworking, but August's salesmanship seemed to come from nowhere. He surprised himself sometimes, the things he could convince people to believe with an assuring tone and a wide grin. Though he knew his neighbors only bought his merchandise out of charity, he couldn't bring himself to regret taking their money. His family had to come first.

Sometimes he worked the same magic on Daisy and Tallulah, Daisy especially. He conjured up stories to fill their dreams at night and answered all their questions by day, even if he had to make up the answers; he built a wall between them and the looming uncertainty. Anything to keep the light from leaving their eyes, as he struggled to hold onto his own.

Together the three of them clung to remnants of the parents who had been taken too soon, hoped that by some miracle, the pieces would make them fierce and lovely things.
