Sometimes, he feels as if he can see ghosts, wedged between ajar doors or loitering around empty hallways or hiding inside colorful socks or waiting as his mother's stew comes to a quiet simmer. Some days, he becomes one of them, a walking shadow, a soul full of soft resonance and a few atoms.

There's sage to burn in his nightstand if he ever wants to bid them away – but they tend not to notice or acknowledge him. After a while, both the silence and the pitter-patter of small disturbances don't affect him anymore. He's gotten used to the drifters and the poltergeists.

He is used to the color red; whenever a new corpse is sent to the funeral home for their last embellishments, he always finds a crimson pearl somewhere on them. When death comes, the color has to empty itself from the vessel.

Death does not discriminate. He's seen it all; addicts choked by their own euphoria, children returning from the Games, accidents, intent. From these sights, come a fascination with the morbid side of the world, a darkness that simmers beneath like his mother's soup. And, he isn't sure if it's right to nurture it.
