Arianna stared at the door as she—

remained huddled in the cold room. Why wouldn’t they turn on the heat? Annora always complained about the house being too cold, but she always held Arianna close to her to warm her up. It had been fifteen minutes since she had been sent to her room, but the seconds ticked slowly as she waited for the doorknob to turn. She could feel the cool draft announce the entrance of him. Tonight, he would be keeping her company as he leaned forward and—

A scream was building up in her throat as her eyes flew open, sweat drenching her clothes and coating her face. No, it had been many years since that last happened, but it had felt so vivid in her sleep that she shook as she curled up into a ball. There was no Annora now to come into the room late at night, no Annora to curl up with her as they sometimes cried together. Arianna couldn’t stand to be in the compartment any longer, not when the walls are closing in on me and it keeps getting colder.

She slipped out of the bed, her bare feet softly landing on the floor of the train. Each step was a soft little pad as Arianna made her way to the main compartment, where they had just had their first meal. The windows now showed darkness with soft lighting, but it was still more inviting than her compartment. Finding a bench with the softest of pillows, Arianna curled up into a ball and rested her head on one of the pillows, holding another pillow in her arms for comfort. It’ll be morning soon. It’ll pass as soon as the sun comes up. And soon enough, her eyes fluttered shut as her mind slipped away into nothingness.

Rex Antilles

The train is something else. I've never been one one before, but I've sat on the grass watching them fly by. They're amazing things. I just wish Echo and Fives were here to take on this adventure with me. I know I probably signed my death paper, but I know what I believe in. I can't let these goonies keep doing what they're doing. The Rhodes family has been through enough, and I have a chance to make a difference. But I am afraid which is why I am roaming through the train watching the stars fly by. I love the night time. It's peaceful. I always meet my friends at night, and I miss them right now. I missed our dinner. I missed talking to them tonight. I feel alone, but I am not alone. I know what I am getting myself into.

I feel bad for my district partner. She's lost someone in the games, and I feel her story is being told before my very eyes. A heavy sigh leaves my chest as I make my way into another compartment. It's where we ate after being escorted to the train. My stomach rumbles and aches for home. I abandon my friends because I wanted a chance to really make a change in the world. Year after year district eleven just sits and watches as Rhodes after Rhodes is taken away, and I feel Snow isn't happy with how things have gone. Another survived, and while he doesn't have the title of victor, he's alive, and it's enough to spread hope.

I rub my eyes, and I see my district partner leaning against the window. My heart aches for her, and I want to help her, but she's asleep, and I don't want to wake her. I slowly, and quietly make my way over to a chair not too far from her. I don't really know much about her. I keep my eyes locked on the windows as the night grows long. I know it's not much, but just having someone keeping watch is important. Maybe I'm preparing for the games too soon. Before I can do anything else, I accidentally knocked a glass over, and it crashes into the ground. I lower my head because this shouldn't have happened. I'm careless, but I'll at least clean up my mess.

A shattering sound jolted Arianna awake as she looked around her surroundings while pushing herself back into the glass. Maybe if I keep going, I’ll eventually melt into it. Her sleep had been so deep that she hadn’t realized she was alone in this compartment nor did she know how long it had been like this. Her district partner had been keeping her company, and it must have been an accident that caused the glass to fall and break because he looked almost ashamed?

Her heart beat started to slow down as Arianna unfolded her legs and lowered them to the ground again. She approached Rex, careful that her bare feet didn’t step on any of the glass shards, and reached for his hand. She looked up at him had he always been so tall? and gave his hand a squeeze to let him know it was okay. Grabbing a thin tray, Arianna went around the floor to pick up the pieces, still trying to calm herself mentally. She tapped on Rex’s arm and gestured at the tray, indicating to him to gather the pieces of the glass there.

Her index finger tapped on the other as she tried to tap deep into her memories. Her hands were out of practice, but they had been the best way to communicate. With her ring finger she tapped on her own hand three times and placed her hand on Rex’s heart. Brave and courageous. She gave him a smile, her first since the reaping.

Rex Antilles

She jumps and it makes me feel even worse. All I wanted was for her to sleep. I didn't mean to wake her, but I did. My heart drops into the pits of my stomach, and I feel bad. My hands are shaking as I reach down trying to pick up broken shards. Soon she joins me, and she grabs my hand giving it a small squeeze, and I feel slightly better. I watch as she grabs a tray and starts picking up the glass, and I join in helping again, and I follow her in putting the broken glass on the tiny tray.

Arianna tapped her finger on her own hand three times before placing her hand on my heart, and I wish I understood what she meant, and then she smiled, and I feel my heart melt away. I care for her a lot, and I only want what's best for her. I want her to do well. I want her to have a family. I want her to make it home alive, but her making it home alive means I have to die, and I'm scared to die. A small grin slowly spreads across my face as I finish placing the last couple pieces of broken glass from the floor, and I take the tray over towards the garbage can.

"You're brave." My voice is quiet as I scrap every last shard into the bag. I know it doesn't mean much, but I care for her a lot. We're in this together, and I only want to help her. I set the tray down and walk back towards her. I stifle back and yawn and rub my eyes. It's late, and I need sleep, but I won't leave her behind. "It's okay to be scared. I'm scared, and I put myself into this." I sigh before my eyes lock on the floor. "I want to help you as much as I can." Even if it means dying.
