Something about the kid reminds him of home.
It doesn't make any sense, not in a way that Nico can wrap his head around, but Nico is watching the kid fiddle with a bunch of tiny pieces, and Nico can't figure out how any of them go together, but there's seems to be some kind of rhyme and reason behind every flick of the child's wrist--
And he's a child to be sure.
Maybe that's what makes Nico's heart beat.
There's something about the inventiveness in his eyes that reminds Nico of Taylor, that reminds him of the girl he'd protected for as long as he can remember, the one who looked at the world so much differently from anyone else he knew.
Like this place was just a collection of puzzle pieces.
Like she just needed to figure out how everything fit together, then she could win.
It's instinct that drives Nico over towards the boy, and instinct that makes him want to run in the other direction, the need to protect and the need to stay unattached working so hard against each other that it makes Nico's heart race. The air is thick in his throat with each step he takes over towards the blonde-haired kid, with each step closer he takes to knowing this boy he may very well have to kill.
"What d'ya got there, kid?" Nico says from over his shoulder, partially surprised that he hadn't heard him coming, but another part of him expecting nothing less.
