At first, she doesn't seek him out.

What he says at the dinner party, Whitney forgives him for it in her head almost immediately, knows that the way she loves and the way that she feels is not universal, knows rationally that all her friends are not going to get along. She knows. But still, she feels, and what she feels is sad.

She truly doesn't understand how she can so love three people and not have all those same three love each other in return.

It's a naive want.

Childish.

But she wants it all the same.

It takes her too long, much longer than she's willing to own up to, but maybe it's better this way. In taking her time, she's given herself a chance to realize that Indigo is entitled to his own experiences, given her a chance to calm and collect, to channel what Margot would say. Think about he must feel with you ignoring him, she would have said. So now here Whitney stands, fist rapping lightly on the door to Room 1, where he and Adam share a room.

"Indy? Are you in there?" she says to the wood.

He had assumed the knock at the door to be Beryl on his way to Adam’s bed for the nth time this week, and so he was pleasantly surprised when he heard his name instead. He bounded up off the bed and opened the door with his free hand, the other holding the mint chocolate milkshake he’d blended for dessert.

The room smelled like food, the plate on his bed holding what was left of his attempted beef wellington and the thick French fries he’d fried as an impromptu side.

“Evening Whitney!”

There was a look on her face that he couldn’t quite read; caught between hesitancy and unspoken words. He can could guess, but over the months he’d learned not to assume. Even if he was right ninety percent of the time, going ahead of people tended to upset them.

At the forefront of anyone’s mind right now was likely the whirlwind of peer reviews that they’d subjected each other to. He hadn’t missed Whitney’s impassioned defense of Poppy, nor the crestfallen look on her face when Poppy had repaid her kindness with a slit throat.

He was fairly certain he knew what she was here to talk about.

Although he couldn’t discount the possibility that the look on her face was due to the fact that his food spattered clothes were in the wash and he was clad in only boxers and socks.

“Something on your mind?” he asked instead before taking a sip of his drink.

She had come because she was sad.

She should have known, even through her dejectedness, that Indigo would lift her spirits without even trying, without even knowing that she was coming. He opens the door, milkshake in hand, with so much skin on display that Whitney laughs the moment she realizes. “Something on your mind?” he asks her, and it tempers Whitney's smile a bit, but it doesn't disappear altogether. For that she's grateful.

It'll be easier to talk about this if she's already smiling. The magic of Indigo Gerber, she would suppose.

"Something's always on my mind," she says, evading his question ever so slightly. "Are those fries I smell?" she says, partly as a way to change the topic, needing a moment more to work herself up to asking about Poppy and Blaine. "God, I'm starving. Can I come in?"

She thinks he'll say yes.

She hopes.

But still, a part of her fears that he'll turn her away, that he'll have started to associate her with Blaine and with Poppy and have started to secretly hate her, that he'll turn her away with a scoff and closed door in her face.

He could identify with that. There was always something on his mind as well. Sometimes even several, and often during the conversations that he was having with other people. Some minds were prone to wandering, and Indigo’s was no exception. She asked if she could share his meal and Indigo raised an eyebrow.

The kitchen was a better place to find food than his and Adam’s room, but it wasn’t a big deal. He waved her in and shut the door behind her. “Help yourself. I made too much. Seasoned, and if I do say so, they turned out much better than the beef wellington.” After ushering her inside, he closed the door behind her and grabbed a pair of shorts from the top of his dresser, pulling them on.

A little decorum never hurt anyone. He sat on the edge of his bed, slurping his milkshake through the straw and debating with himself about whether or not he should speak. Should he bring up Poppy? Would that do more harm than good? When he finally spoke, his voice was soft.

“Today’s challenge was an interesting exercise in how we handle praise and criticism.”

There was a skelephant in the room and he knew what it was. “I’m sure Malcolm enjoyed the show.” He paused, staring at a chunk of mint leaf that was poking out of the top of his drink. ‘I don’t think many of us did.”
