If his life was a movie, a spillage of technicolor like dreams and reveries, Max wouldn’t be the main character – no, that would be Mab.

He would be the lone mise-en-scene, always in the background, shying away from the bright spotlight because that’s what he’s been taught to do ever since he was born: to cower behind her avenging shadow of violence and gore.

Siblings were meant to protect each other—

but twins were born to die for one another, the constellations of their destinies interwoven together by some strange thread.

He’d die for Mab, but he wasn’t certain if she’d do the same. She was the clenched fist and Max was the force behind it; she was the furious snake and Max was the poison in her fangs.

She dealt with thugs and thieves using the same sort of violence they were brimmed with but Max’s fists weren’t too strong for punches, the bones slightly too frail and breakable. He found his use in the textbooks and in Nine’s pharmacies, stealing little pills from ragged men in back alleys, poison with a sweet coat of sugar, crushed belladonna in the red-wine chalices of crooked men and dirty merchants.

This is your job, their parents said and pressed pennies to their eyes, this is how you make it in the world. The demon twins, the scums of Nine, the silver fox and her wretched brother.

Mab was the ghost story but the monsters within the story? They were tailored by Max.
