Go and ride your light

The weather was seemingly perfect for fishing in District Four today, which was certainly a good thing, as that was the District's industry, after all. That morning, Calvin had taken his fishing gear out to the dock where his boat was located, prepared to try to bring in some good fish to bring home to his wife and two children. He'd dressed himself in cargo shorts and a casual t-shirt, along with his favorite fishing hat. This wasn't the image he necessarily had presented to people when he was running for mayor during the 75th election, but it wasn't a bad image, either. It was a good image, if anything. He was a family man, confident in his own appearance, and ready to bring some food home for his loved ones.

When Calvin had boarded his boat and brought it out into the water, he spotted a younger man and a child doing the same. He gave then a smile and a wave when he saw them, but he was unsure if they had noticed him or not. Casting his line into the water, he watched the pair from a distance while he fished. As time passed, he had managed to bring in a few fish that were a sufficient enough size to feed his family for dinner that night. Bringing his line back in, he then brought his boat a little closer to the young man and child that he had waved to earlier, but not too close so as to be in the way of their fishing. He just wanted them to be able to hear him.

He raised his voice a little bit when he spoke, but just enough to enunciate. He wasn't trying to startle them in any way, and he wasn't exactly yelling, rather just speaking in a louder tone so that he could be heard. He waved to them again as he spoke.

"Hello over there! Any luck with the fish?" he asked of them.

Calvin wondered whether the two were a father-son duo, or perhaps siblings with several years between them. Regardless, having someone to fish with was always a good time, in his opinion. He could remember his younger days, fishing with his younger brother. He also thought of his more recent years, bringing his older son, John, out on the boat to do the same thing.

The man had a smile on his face when he spoke to the two nearby people on the other boat. He just hoped that they knew he was just trying to be friendly, and weren't put off by his words. There had been plenty of people who thought that he was just trying to win their votes for the election around the time of the 75th, and after that, people thought that he was still trying to do that for the future, up until they noticed that he had decided not to run for the 80th election. Hopefully, at this point, people just though of him as an average person, and no longer a politician.

Maybe these people wouldn't even recognize him. They were young, after all, and it was usually just the adults that knew who he was at this point.

On such a beautiful day, Calvin couldn't help but be in a positive mood. Plus, he'd caught some fish for his family and encountered this friendly-seeming fellow as well. Overall, things seemed to be turning out rather well that day. Calvin was generally a person with a rather positive outlook on life to begin with, so adding that to an already good day made him very happy. The older man listened to the response of the younger man who called back from the other boat. He'd explained that they weren't having much luck with the fish, as the boy he called Kenn apparently kept dropping the net in the water. He also noted that Kenn seemed eager to learn before asking how Calvin's luck was with the fish.

"I've gotten quite a few fish myself," Calvin responded. "If he's eager to learn, I can help teach him, if you'd like," he continued. "I've taught a few people over the years."

It was true. Calvin had not only worked on trying to teach his own child to fish, but had helped others in their fishing endeavors, too. Before Calvin started teaching others to do what he does, he had to learn from someone himself, of course. Calvin's father had taught him how to do it all, and he was grateful for the lessons that he received, despite it being difficult and frustrating for him in the very beginning of it all.

Calvin slowly started to bring his boat a bit closer to the young man and child. It would make it easier to hear one another, and, if they did want help, it'd be much easier to teach someone what to do if you were closer to them, rather than quite a ways away across the water. Hopefully, Calvin would be able to be of some assistance. One of the man's passions was helping others in any way he could, and he very rarely asked for anything in return. That was part of why he had initially wanted to be mayor. He figured that, as mayor, he'd be able to help even more people than before.

Unfortunately, that didn't work out. He certainly won't complain about the current mayor, of course, as he believes that the right choice was made in each election.

Bringing his mind back to fishing, Calvin hoped he could be useful to the pair of young ones in the other boat.
