She thinks to herself, she’s far too kind for her own good. She gives out chances like free candy, never the one to scold or criticize. She tries her hardest, of course, but it’s always too soft. She can’t help the way that she is, and she’s too set in her ways to change. She’s stubborn, she knows this, and so does anybody who asks what she thinks about anything. There is no gray middle ground for her— only black and white.
The rules were made for a reason, and they should be followed. Most of them are unfair, sure, but there’s nothing she can do about it. Following the rules keeps you out of trouble, and staying out of trouble keeps you alive. She needs to keep her siblings alive. She envies the way they seem so careless, like the world hasn’t destroyed them yet. She hasn’t been destroyed yet either, but she can feel it, creeping around the edges of her life.
She tries not to think about it. She has other things to focus on, like keeping her siblings in check and keeping her garden alive. She prefers plants much more to the livestock her family keeps. It feels simpler to her, an easy list in her head— cover the seeds in dirt, douse with water, watch them grow. Go inside, see your siblings, ever changing, always growing.
