A sly grin spreads from ear to ear with every step he takes. Derecho isn’t afraid as long as the waters are rushing near. His mind lost, captures by the sound of the waves crashing against the shore. Its moments like these he lives for. Sand squishing between his toes, the sun rising high above the sky reflecting from the ocean. It’s perfect, and today it all is even better.

Winning a tournament, and proving he’s the best only makes all of this entirely worth it. From one day to the next, Derecho yearns for a win. So many families have had it better, and knowing that his sister is fighting in this same tournament. Being the best sibling, the best Sinclair to enter this arena.

He’s not afraid.

The spear is one of his favorite weapons, and being here, holding it now means the world. The young male looks his opponent in the eye even as he strikes after asking if he’s single. Why does it even matter?

"I can be." He shrugs, but it’s far from true. “That is if you want me.” The grin grows even larger. This is the moment he lives for, and maybe it’s the one that will change the world.

Even as the tip of the trident drives through his foot, Derecho doesn’t move. Pain is temporary, and his pride will reign on forever.

Derecho Sinclair

Losing this match isn't an option because Derecho isn't a failure, but maybe instead of beating himself up once this is over, he can go on his way learning from it. Losing isn't in his vocabulary, and yet he's finding himself behind. It's impossible to even imagine what his sister would say when he's the one always stating just how good he is.

She's here somewhere, and he would never hear the end of it if she made it further than him. He closes his eyes listening to the waves once more. They're his home. They're where he belongs, and while he has no idea who this guy is, Derecho doesn't stop to look through his memories.

Despite it all, the grin never goes away. He owns is with pride until it stands in his way like it's doing now, yet he doesn't change a thing.

If he doesn't get his act together, he'll walk away with nothing more than a few wounds. Blood gushes from the gaping holes, but it's nothing a few bandages can fix up later. Right now all that matters is actually hitting the target before him. Taking a deep breath, he opens his eyes feeling a new beginning. The first shot was him warming up, but this one he's going to make count.

He hopes.
