His father was beginning to doubt modern medicine. Despite the fact that it had kept Blair's mother alive for so long, he was starting to think it wasn't working simply because she wasn't getting better. Blair had tried to point out that, while she wasn't getting better, she certainly wasn't getting worse, but he had refused to listen. Instead of telling Blair to make his rounds at the pharmacies, he directed him to a different type of shop on the outskirts of the district square.

The shop was filled with glass jars of herbs, chunks of glimmering crystals, and all the surfaces seemed to be made of tanned wood. It was beautiful, but Blair couldn't understand how this was supposed to help his mother. He glanced at the list his father had given him, scribbled names of things he'd never heard of, then back around the shop. As he did, he caught a glimpse of a boy he hadn't seen in a while.

He and Topher had enjoyed a nice day out by the lake, but he'd been too busy since then to try to find him again. Seems fate had given him a gift today.

"Topher," he said, peering over the center table of soaps. "It's been a while."

You were always focused on your siblings more than what you were owed. Your parents made it hard for you to go out when you wanted too, and when reaping season was right around the corner, you were always in charge.

It made it hard to live a life you yearned for, but lucky for you, it would be months until the next one, which meant that your parents would actually be just that. Parents. It was a foreign concept to them, but one that they knew enough to let you off the hook. You pursed your lips tightly as the cold air had hit your face. This was your first taste of freedom in a while.

You weren’t thinking about anything else.

Your parents had sent you on an errand but told you directly that you could do it at your own leisure. Run to the store and grab a couple medical supplies. It sounded simple, which is why you were probably into the idea of it.

It was a chance for you to enjoy the world again.

As you walked into the store, you realized that it had been changed since the last time you were here. Your hand graced the tanned wood that looked like it was fresh. This place mustve been booming since the last time you came here.

You heard a familiar voice, and you beamed the moment you saw him. Blair. It had been forever since you had, but then again, it also had been a while since you were able to leave the house. ”Its good to see you.” You offered a gentle smile as you glanced over to see a piece of paper in his hands. ”What are you in the market for?” you smirked, letting both of your hands sprawl out against the table of soaps.

“Its good to see you,” Topher said, and Blair couldn’t help but smile in return. It was tough work, making him smile, but he liked the feeling of being recognized. “What are you in the market for?”

Blair looked down at his hands, pressed against the table of soaps, and tried not to think too much about them. He focused on the soaps instead, the soft chunks of pink and green and yellow. “My father has decided he distrusts pills. He thinks some of these herbs are supposed to help my mother.”

It was a silly statement, so he laughed. He was starting to think that his father didn’t actually want his mother to stay alive. He wasn’t a doctor, he had no idea what was best for her, and yet here he was, running around like he did. Blair wondered why his father would have bothered with his mother so long if he was just going to let her die.

“I think I’m just supposed to scoop them out of the jars, but it’s kind of daunting,” Blair said, shaking his sad thoughts out of his mind and gesturing to the jars of herbs. “I feel like the people who work here are going to judge me for not knowing what I’m doing.”

You did not miss a beat. Your hands splayed out across the soap table like you owned it yourself. You didn’t, and you never would. This place was foreign most of the time, and even now, it proved to confuse you even more at this point.

However, you were always a risk-taker. A go getter. You didn’t let anyone stop you unless it was the only option. When it came to taking care of your siblings, you didn’t have that choice, but when your parents actually stepped in to help, then the world was your oyster.

You listened to the boy speak and you couldn’t help but wonder what it was like to live into Blair’s world. ”Well, this place has changed since the last time Ive been here.” You said with a small smile as you tried to ease his worry. ”Your father sounds like a man of blind faith. The deadliest kind.” You were hoping that he wasn’t going to mind the attack on his father. Topher could only be honest here.

”I can help you if you want?” you said kindly as you held out your hand for the list. ”This way you don’t have to do it alone.”
