It's almost intoxicating, the before. When silence sits like a heavy fog over those entirely unaware of the coming. They do not notice the water recede or the wave that's building on the horizon. Their sirens do not blare to warn them of the coming threat. All that does exist is the anticipation for the one who watches. I live in this world now, this constant state of waiting for the smoke to rise and for defiance towards Death to sear my mark deeper into the flesh of the Capitol. I breathe it in wholly.

The bomb detonates, a thousand shards of glass erupts from the store. In an instant, the building is engulfed in the flames of my fury. As the heat of Hell rises, all that can be heard above the breaking boards of cinder all that can be heard is my laughter. I lather the stones out front with my mark, the mark of the new ruler of this District's darkness. I don't hide from my crimes, they all know who I am.

As the others in my gang begin to vanish down sewers and through alleys, I turn to join them. Flesh finds flesh and book bound in leather falls into the fresh paint on the floor. I pick it up and flip through a few of the ruined pages. The boy before me is still on the ground just staring at me. I hold out a hand still dripping with the residue of my revenge.

"Keepers will be crawling all over this place in minutes. Plus," my other hand closes the book, "I owe you another copy."

Ollivander Nixton

For a second, he's seeing stars, a vision of the book he once was reading, where a boy flies to space. The boy dancing with stars as the supernova of a star glitters behind him, but Oli isn't a boy in space, he's in three, alone and bored of his rich life. A silence fills him as the flames of a building burst to life and he feels himself fall onto his butts, staring at the once blue sky, now graced in greys. It's beautiful in a strikingly different way than he expected. Maybe it's his imagination, but he swears there's a destructive art to it. Explosions, fire, and the soot that will inevitably be left behind.

Then, there's an angel or maybe he's the devil. Standing there, as if the world burning wasn't unusual for him. Larceny Theft rings in his head, but he quiets down the thought as he stares. Larceny Theft lived in a world unlike his own and yet, he's flipping through the books. Pages of ruined paper from the explosion and aftermath as it blows in his hands. A second of staring at him for a moment turns in what feels like hours. Beautiful, chaotic, and something mystical about him as Ollivander could see the fantasy the boy lives in behind his eyes. The hand comes forward as Oli grabs it, letting Larceny Theft pull him up onto his feet.

"Keepers will be crawling all over this place in minutes. Plus," The destroyed book in his hands catching their eyes. "I owe you another copy."

Oli is stunned for a moment as he stares wide eyed for awhile longer, until he lets his voice break with a small crack that's almost like lightning.

"Uhhhhh, yeah. You d-do. L-Let's go."

His hands are soft, they remind me of Vandal's. They haven't held the same weight mine have, haven't been attained the same stains mine have. He's like Severus, a boy plucked from a field of flowers now drawing dangerously close to fire. I'm surprised he even takes my hand at all, given the graveyard of boys who have been broken behind me. Surely he's seen their faces, watched as they bled out in front of the world for a demon like me. What is that always draws tenderness to darkness?

Now isn't the time for these thoughts, as I pull him up from his place on the floor. The smoke from the building is now billowing clear above the high rises of the lower end, the Peacekeepers will be here soon. I hand the boy his book and throw a swath of cloth around his head.

"Keep your head down and don't lose track of me."

I take off down a short street and through an old building I know to be empty. Only once I'm at the opening to the sewer system do I stop to give him one last look, but this time my gaze is serious and cold.

"Look, you can leave now and you'll be fine. But if you follow me then your life is mine. You are a part of my gang, a part of the Thefts."

I slide open the manhole cover.

"And I don't think I need to tell you what happens a lot to boys who follow me."

Ollivander Nixton

"Keep your head down and don't lose track of me."

For whatever reason, his feet follows Larceny Thefts, matching the pace and the exact spots the guy steps on as if he were following a path to heaven or to hell. The beating of his own heart and the stars filling his eyes as he clasps as tight as possible to the cloth around his mouth and grips the destroyed book under his arm, steadying himself with a world beneath his armpit. A chill runs down his spine as they approach through an empty building before appearing before a way into the sewer.

Those bright eyes reach him as the world freezes and the words hold heavy.

"Look, you can leave now and you'll be fine. But if you follow me then your life is mine. You are a part of my gang, a part of the Thefts."

A choice. Everything comes to a choice, whether it be his father screaming at him about pride and legacy or a boy from three who died and came back to life; Ollivander knew more than enough about tough choices. His world wasn't his own. The ash, fire, and soot that falls to the ground was the world Larceny Theft lived in. Part of him wants to run, run as fast as he can away from here, but he's frozen to the spot, taking in the fantasy.

There's only so many books a guy can read before the world starts passing by him.

The sound of the manhole opening up makes him fall back out of his head, catching the words of Larceny Theft.

"And I don't think I need to tell you what happens a lot to boys who follow me."

Gritting his teeth, he can see the way death looms around Larceny Theft. Lost souls taken away just so a single boy from Three could live longer. For a moment, there's a step away from the manhole as Ollivander can feel the fleeting feeling of flight in his steps, but after taking a moment to look back at the flames and the embers of a fantasy world with Larceny Theft, he knew what he was going to do. The manhole was easy enough to drop down onto where he was safely able to walk along the path of the sewers.

A shy smile passed on to Larceny Theft.

"I'm not like other boys, Theft."
