avriel left a trap behind nearly everywhere he went but most didn't get sprung. Collaborating with his alliance, he got pretty creative with them, to the point where I wasn't even sure what I was trying to do and had to draw silly lil' diagrams. So here's some of that!
I've included this here because if you've read av at all, you'll know that taking things apart and building things is his specialty!
KEEP CALM AND PICNIC ON - DAY 1
- placed at the lake -
mechanical description of trap for GM use:
Picnic basket encasing a 12 volt battery / lithium battery which contains sulphuric acid which is corrosive to skin and clothing. The battery has a full bottle of wine and a full bottle of whisky poured over it + the glass from both bottles broken over it in large, sharp chunks. Avriel ties these chunks loosely to the battery using string. Then there is a match book, book closed and a match resting on the sandpaper, attached by the end with duct tape to a hair clip that Avriel slipped through the top of the basket. These all sit on top of the wine-soaked battery. The clip is shut and set to be triggered when Avriel closed the lid over the trap.
A beautifully crafted whicker picnic basket sits on a checkered blanket on a bank beside the lake. The basket's lid is firmly closed to protect the items within from the elements. As you draw closer, you catch the scent of blackberry wine. Do you open the basket?
When the lid opens, the trap is triggered. The tribute hears a click as a hair clip opens and a match strikes sandpaper. The flame ignites, igniting the match book placed beneath it, which in turn lights a wine and whisky-soaked car battery on fire, which then explodes in a matter of seconds. The explosion sends glass shrapnel from the alcohol bottles, shrapnel from the battery and finally, battery acid in a three hundred and sixty degree circle around it.
HOW TENDER DO YOU LIKE YOUR MEAT? - DAY 2
- placed at the challenge course -
*trap used by Vietnam in the Vietnam war, referred to as a Tiger Trap.
Here is a mechanical description:
Two large pieces of wood tied together with rope, with carved wooden spikes driven into their underside using the butt of Avriel's newly acquired machete to hammer and carve. The wooden spiked platform is then tied on either end and suspended over a branch within the boughs of a tree. The rope is pulled over the branch, pulled around a lower branch, pulled around a large jutted out root and then pulled across the ground across the path to be tied to a wooden stake. The stake is hammered in loosely. This creates a fully system with a trip wire. Rocks are then laid on top of the logs to create weight so that when the trip wire is pulled, the platform falls fast to hit an unsuspecting tribute.
You step forward and you feel an odd pressure against the front of your ankle. The cracking sound of a rope moving quickly follows. The tree above you groans in protest and when you look up to figure out what the sound is, all you see is a wooden platform full of wooden spikes coming straight for your face.
SALAD TONG SNATCHER - DAY 3
- placed at the picnic fields -
A set of antlers is tied horizontally to the base of a long piece of wood. In the corner of this contraption is a large rock to give swinging weight to it. The pieces are placed over a branch and tied together, salad tong style and a piece of wood is wedged in between to prop them open. There's a trip wire hooked up below and when that is sprung, it tugs the piece of wood out and sends the song swinging closed, incidentally with the tribute in the middle.
Here is a trap write up:
You find some shade on the edge of the clearing, your weary legs have you dragging your feet. You feel the tug on the front of your ankle too late and before you have time to even think, four large antlers on wooden poles are swinging towards you from the left and the right.
MACHETE WHIP TRAP - DAY 4
- placed at the hiking trail -
a variation of a bamboo whip trap, invented by the Vietcong during the Vietnam war.
A long, fresh branch from a young tree that it still green is secured with rope to wooden pegs hammered securely into the ground using a butt of a machete. The branch is bent back to create tension and the two machetes are secured to the end. A trip wire is attached to the peg holding the branch in place and when it is triggered, the branch will whip forward to hit the tribute in the back of the legs.
Here is a trap write up:
The hiking trail seems to go on and on, it must cover nearly half of the arena. As you walk, there is much to see in the forest to your right and left. You grow complacent and forget to check your footing and by the time you register the trip wire, it's too late to jump out of the way of the machetes heading straight for the back of your legs.
when calling avriel, his voice messaging system is on rotation mostly becuase it annoys the hell out of their escort, Gloria. Listed below is what some of their leave-a-message recordings might be. If you'd like to leave Avriel a message, you can refer to this thread and randomly roll 1-7 for a result. How your character deals with it is up to you!
"hello, Avriel speaking. . . . . Sike. I'm not available right now, please leave a message at the beep. . Beep! . . . . Just kidding, still me. Now leave a message at the beep."
"You've reached Beck Hailsham, Victor of the 84th games. If you're looking for Avriel, you've got the wrong number. Please hang up and try again."
