[/color] Hot tears stung the back of his eyes. The trudging quickly turned into stomping through the snow as fast as he could. ”I didn’t kill him!” He shouted frantically, breaking into a sprint. ”I didn’t kill him, I didn’t kill him, I didn’t kill him!” Warm, salty tears streamed down his face as he ran, the little residue trails freezing against his skin. Snowflakes whipped past him as he ran, arms pumping to and fro.
The snow was falling steadily in large puffs, piling up on the thick, bare branches of the trees. Inches upon inches, snowflakes sticking to one another until the branches were all about five times their original height. Though it was midday, the forest was absolutely silent. A peaceful silence, nothing like the eerie quiet that usually happens when a predator is lurking around and all the birds go silent. There was nothing sinister about the blanket of white that covered the ground and was still getting deeper.
There was no peace inside of Dominic’s head, though. He trudged slowly through the snow, dragging his boots to create deep ruts and build up piles of white in front of his legs as though he were plowing a trail. Emerald green eyes darting back and forth, scanning every bit of land before him, searched vainly for something to distract himself. Jana will leave you soon, there’s no doubt about it. The boy cringed down and back as though he had been struck in the stomach, quickly turning and heading off in another direction. ’No, you’re wrong. She’s not gonna leave me. She loves me! She said so herself!’ He shoved his hands into his pockets as far down as they could go, his eyes keeping their gaze on the ground in front of his feet. He was already breathing quickly from anxiety, but the cold air was just making it worse, nearly hyperventilating. You think she’s going to stay, you don’t know for sure. No one’s actually stayed with you, remember? And even when they do, you kill them. Just like your father. You killed him, remember?
Coming across a well-used logging path, Dominic’s boot suddenly struck a patch of ice, his foot shooting out from underneath him. He fell down hard on his front side, forehead hitting the ice and everything suddenly went silent and black.
Dominic wasn’t going to complain about the pain; he had peace in the darkness and the first few moments of when he came back around. Blinking a few times to clear his vision, he lay on the cold ground for a few minutes, falling snow collecting on him. ’What’s the use?’ The thought had entered his head so many times, but it had never been answered. Using his gloved fingers, Dominic scraped lazily at the ice, wiping off the loose snow. If you just lay here, no one will care. You’ll do everyone good by staying here and freezing to death. They’ll be much happier knowing that there’s no crazy psycho running around. He shut his eyes tightly, trying to focus on the burning pain the cold was putting on his cheek that was on the ground. The schizophrenic knew that the voice was right. No one was ever happy when there was a possible killer in the area. He had killed his dad, who was to say that he wouldn’t try to strike again? Once he had tried hurting Jana, and when he was near Themba’s daughter, he had tried attacking her, too. Such an innocent little girl, and he had wanted nothing more than to just throw her against the ground and bash her head in. Sobs slowly began to shake Dominic as he lay on the ground, curling up into a tight ball on his side. ”You’re right…” He admitted in a small, trembling voice. ”I’m better off just freezing to death here. I want to die. You’re right, I’m better off dead.” He kept his eyes closed, shivering from the cold and the continuous sobbing.
