Maybe
Age: Sixteen
District: Twelve
Only once before did it feel like Jesse's heart stopped beating, that the world was falling apart underneath her, and she didn't know what to do. It wasn't only but a few days after Mary Ellen joined their broken family. Even from day one the misunderstood girl had caught Maybe's eyes, despite all of her problems that seemed to be covering everything else about her. To the other she just needed help, some tough-love to get her into check. But nearly everyone in their family has those addiction problems, giving them no room to say anything. Maybe toke it upon herself as she felt a connection she didn't understand, she only knew it was unlike anyone else. It's hard not to gain her love, but this was much different, Mary Ellen somehow had her entire heart.
It's hard to determine which circumstance was worse now she stands in different shoes a year later. The horrible feeling of coming home to an over-dosed Rainbow still haunts her today. What if she didn't return so soon? Drugs can take someone's life within a couple of minutes, and she can still remember her fast beating heart and shaky hands as she forced Rainbow to puke up the poison. The benefit of being the only one who's problem doesn't lie within drinking or drugs, she knows how to handle the ones who do. Many times before she had practice with this very thing, but only Mary Ellen brought Jesse to tears and begging for her to wake up.
The same exact fear runs though every one of Jesse's veins as she witnesses her lover walk off towards the stage. Exactly how she begged that night for Rainbow to not leave her, she finds herself that day. Desperate, she'd do anything to take this horrible pain away. Was she being selfish? The idea of twenty-three children dying this year completely loses her as her only concern is Mary Ellen. You can't leave me. She's unable to even think about holding back tears as they stream down her cheeks. Her biggest fears coming true right before her eyes. Of course Rainbow has to stay strong, everyone knows the weaklings are the first to die within the hunger games. But for once Maybe's falling apart, incapable of being sturdy at the time she's most needed.
Her bright eyes don't part from Mary Ellen the entire time she's upon the stage, not until the doors shut her out. Maybe would probably even swear she didn't blink. Immediately her legs take her towards the town building, knowing she would be given some time to say goodbye. She'd force them to allow her in if need be, she has to see Mary Ellen. The rest of their thrown together family also wait by the door, awaiting for their last chances to say goodbye. All of them turn their heads towards Maybe, waiting for directions that she always has. This time, she's speechless though and they stare at her flooded cheeks in shock.
"There's too many of you, you'll have to go in three groups." A peacekeeper informs, but Maybe doesn't accept this. She was unable to show affection to Mary Ellen around anyone, and they aren't going to take this away from her. Sure they'll have to go in two large groups, but none of them object as they're all aware that something was going on between the two girls. "Or single and two groups." He mumbles as the door shuts in front of them all.
For a second Jesse's frozen as her eyes lock with Mary Ellen's. Did this really happened? With so many other children within District Twelve, she was hoping her nightmare would never come true. Once again her heart drops to the pit of her stomach. She was going to wake, she has to. But none of dreams have ever reached this far. This must be reality. She crosses the room quietly as she always does in the morning as to not wake up anyone. Without even a word she embraces Mary Ellen, hoping this wouldn't be the last time. "I'm so sorry." The tears begin again, and as strong as she wanted to stay for the one actually going to the games, she's unable to. "I should of volunteered for you, I froze." But in all honesty she also knew between the two of them, maybe even in their whole dysfunctional family, Rainbow has the best chances of winning. There's no way Jesse would be able to pull around to even killing a bug.
