President Snow was not a partier.
In fact, he despised them. Shallow, flashily dressed, pathetic fools, throwing themselves at one another, at his food, at his alcohol. They overwhelmed him. They irritated him. And yet, his advisors thought it would be great for his image to throw many of them, during which he’d flit from room to room, wine in hand, shaking hands and making clever jokes. His eyes were constantly in motion, from one person to another, to the Avoxes who refilled his glass, to the Victors who sometimes were in attendance. He could not trust any of them.
Thus, the idea of throwing a masquerade ball led him to dismiss several overly-enthusiastic advisors and quietly do away with the very one who proposed the idea, exclaiming to him: “Masks are in!” He could barely even begin to imagine the chaos that would ensue at such a party. No, he had to keep his subjects tightly controlled...in his view…
Yet, as he retired to his study, several nights later, a thought came to him. He leaned back in his chair, fingertips pressed together, and considered this: a masked ball would provide the perfect opportunity to change wrongdoers in action. Falsely, they’d presume safety, behind the guise of a mask. And if the president could have a system, a way of identifying who worked for him amidst a sea of unknowing guests and some rebels, he could perhaps turn a masquerade ball into a business opportunity. And if nothing at all, masks were, indeed, in…
He announced the masquerade ball several days later to the excitement of the Capitol. It would be a party only to those most deserving: the higher-ups, the elite. Peacekeepers, Victors, Gamemakers, certain Capitol members were all invited and encouraged to wear a mask and reveal their identity to no one. The several days leading up to the party were filled with preparing. Streamers. Balloons. Alcohol. Performers. Fireworks. And masks. The president chose a black and grey one that was fitted on his face minutes before the guests were set to arrive by masked Avoxes.
Today, he wouldn’t make an opening speech. Today, he would fade into the crowd, mingle with the guests he so despised. Tonight, he wasn’t President Snow. Tonight, he was just another mask in the crowd.~~~
