Shine became a little more serious, “You going to be upset if she hooks up with someone else tonight? Because I should get you back in there if you are.”
Santiago snorted, “That’s all I need. For my wife to go off with someone else on our wedding night. Fine. I’ll go back. Thanks, man.”
Shine gave his shoulder a supportive squeeze and led them back inside, saying quietly over his shoulder, “She is REALLY attractive though. So at least there’s that.”
“Yay!” Santiago said sarcastically, as he followed his friend back to the wedding table. He half expected Ruby to be off chatting up his friends, but she was sitting there by herself, looking rather miserable and sipping at a wine glass filled with water. He half threw himself into the chair next to hers and managed a smile at her. “My wine glass looks more fun than yours. Want a sip?”
She smiled, “I shouldn’t.” She clearly sounded tempted, “I’m not allowed, technically. But a sip wouldn’t hurt, would it?”
“I don’t think so. I don’t think your parents are going to complain. I’m your husband now, after all.”
She grimaced, but hid the expression with his wine glass as she took a sip, getting him to hold the glass to her lips for her. The wine was good and she wanted to guzzle the whole lot, but she knew that was a bad idea for the baby, so made herself stop at a couple of small swallows. She smiled at him over the rim of the glass coquettishly. “Thanks.” She licked her lips slowly, giving her gay husband one more try to test his response to her.
He watched her closely and smiled at her as he took his glass back and took another drink. “So, I was thinking that tomorrow we should probably have a long, serious and possibly boring conversation. To sort things out, you know?”
She gave him a dubious look. He had seemed to enjoy watching her flirt with him, but then to say THAT was very strange. It utterly killed the mood, and she decided the look he gave must have just been him being friendly. “Sort what out? It’s kinda done.” She gestured at the guests and tables, to indicate she meant that the wedding was done and there was nothing to be done about it.
“Well, we’re going to have to live with each other for a very long time. You could tell me if there was anything you wanted, or needed, and I could do the same. The actual wedding night doesn’t seem like the time for negotiations though. That would be pretty unromantic.”
She took his wine glass from his hand and downed the lot in one long swallow. “Romance?” she said bitterly as she smacked her lips on the last of it, annoyed that it didn’t seem to be drowning her feeling of misery and dread.
