Written Transcript for the Speech of Candidate Jewel Chrysolite
My fellow citizens, I thank you for joining me here tonight to mark this historic occasion.
As many of you already know, I am a fairly new member of society here in Thirteen. Unlike the vast majority of you, I am Capitol-born and Capitol-raised, and until just over five years ago I was a Capitol resident, as well. My relocation here was one not spurred by choice, but by necessity. In my former home, knowledge of this place is all but nonexistent, for if there is one thing that has not changed in seventy five years of peace, it is the complete confidence in the knowledge of their overwhelming victory and absolute power over the remnants of society.
And anyone else who thinks otherwise? Well, let's just say there's a reason that I opted to flee at the first opportunity.
Even while living there, I never loved the world that Coriolanus Snow had built upon. It's a rich, decadent society where you want for little and empathize even less. You may think I'm joking, but there's a reason that the most anticipated and celebrated event of the year is the brutal slaughter of twenty three innocent children.
And yet, here we are, three quarters of a century after the end of the Dark Days, and where are we? We're in exactly the same place as we were before the majority of us were even a twinkle in our mother's eye - stagnating underground in a clockwork society.
Now don't get me wrong, I don't hate the day to day life that goes on around here. I actually quite enjoy it compared to the barely organized chaos that was back in my old place. But we can be so, so much more than a forgotten memory wasting away beneath the earth. Our forebearers did not form a pact with the Capitol so that we could waste away our lives down here.
No, now is the time for action. Now is the time for us to claim our rightful place in the world above. For too long, the Capitol has kept its iron chokehold wrapped around the throats of the other twelve districts, those who were not as lucky as we were, and for seventy five long years they have paid the price in our stead. That's around one hundred and fifty children from each district that have needlessly lost their lives, all for the sake of mere entertainment. And yet, here we sat, a shadow of our former selves as all we did was survive.
How many more innocent children must die? How many more years must we sit out of the public eye as the Capitol inflicts endless cruelties on those whose only crime was being born in the wrong place? We are the only ones who can break that chain of oppression, so it is we who must act.
Distrust my origins all you want, call me an outsider due to the fact that I have lived here for only a fraction of my life, I don't care. But think of it this way. In me, you have a woman whose knowledge of Capitol life, society, and geography is matched by few. In me, you have a woman whose desire for justice and vengeance is undulled by generations of living beneath the soil. And in me, you'll find someone who will hold the best interests of every ordinary citizen across the country to heart, and act on them.
The choice is yours, folks, but remember this. Together, you and I can bring the change that our district and our country need and deserve.
