"To victory!" he had shouted with the crowd in the square that day, with the passion of the district and the fervent energy of Leia Chevallier herself stirring up a pride he had never before known he felt.
"To victory," echoed in his mind long after he had left that square, after he had gone back to the training center to practice a hundred more repetitions of this week's fighting stance, after he had headed home and his parents had commended him on his discipline and dedication.
He was a Lumiere, after all. They only demanded the best from him, not like those other children whose parents were too soft-hearted to stop them from wasting their time. That was not the way of One. It was already shameful enough that his cousin had somehow managed to get himself killed by a skinny waif from Ten, ending their district's chances of victory this year.
In fact, the entire District One turnout was a disgrace. Leia was right. There was no reason some drunk from Eight should have triumphed over all their training centers, all their strategies, all their painstaking preparation.
"To victory," he murmured. They needed someone to make sure only the best of them volunteered. No more idiots. No more psychos. No more fourteen-year-old classmates that wore cute little sparkles and were rubbish at actual fighting.
Leia was that person. Lips the color of fresh blood and hair so smooth he could almost feel it between his fingers and eyes so brilliant he swore she could see people's souls -
If anyone deserved to win, it was her.
So when he spots her beautiful locks as he's leaving the market, he follows. Past the main street, down an avenue and through an alleyway, far too preoccupied to notice that he is heading into a very unfamiliar part of town.
"M-Miss Chevallier," he begins when she finally spots him.
Ripred, what was it he wanted to say to her in the first place? She was just so mesmerizing -
"I... I just wanted to say I really admire you,"
No, he screamed silently at himself, That's what any idiot would say, but you're a Lumiere -
"I want you to make us win."
