She doesn’t waste time. No one here does.
With a blink of an eye, Annie watched as Shy took his last stand against the fiery personality from five.
He did not want to go out without a bang, Annie could sense that much.
And in her opinion, he did not disappoint, but quickly, Denali retaliated in an equally breakneck motion. The smell of burnt skin mixing with the sweetness from the grape vines.
Something that Annie would give the world to never smell again.
But that was on her to make it out alive.
As for Shy Aubergine, he does not.
The sword cuts through his bicep, and Annie cannot help but wonder if that really was enough to take down the boy.
But with the signaling of a cannon, she realizes that she is wrong.
It was more than enough.
And so now it was two verse one.
Annie would be a fool not to realize that she was going to be pelted by both of them next.
She knew that they both wanted her dead, and the only thing that kept Annie going was that she had the will to take them both on.
If they wanted to kill her, they needed to work harder than they ever have for something in their life.
She was quick on the knife, pulling it up and getting ready to aim it at the girl who was now by the wreckage of whatever the fuck the RLS trolley problem was. Ripred knows that Denali probably didn’t have too much fight in her left, but that did not mean that would stop.
Annie expected her to come at her with full force after all.
Because at the end of the day, both of these girls would kill just to go home, just like Annie would.
And in this moment, Annie wished that they could have gotten off on a better foot, but now that it was only three of them left, there was no time for pleasantries, not matter how much Annie actually wanted to get to know Denali and Bette.
Maybe in another life when they werent thrown into a place where they had to kill each other.
Annie focused on Denali, waiting for the wind to pick up for a moment, just enough to carry a knife to the spot she needed to silence her for good.
But then her eyes traveled to the girls mouth, and she wondered what the hell she could have been muttering under her breath.
Annie thought about it for a second, and she could not lie to herself.
There was a lot of doubt in her mind that she was going to make it out of this alive.
Doubt had always been a plague for her, but she never let it infect her mind. A parasite was never welcomed after all. But when it got it, it plunged deep into its victim, ready to suck the very life out of her, and there would be nothing that she could do about it.
For once, she thought about letting it.
Did she deserve to go home? Did she deserve to be a victor? Did she deserve to see Angel Mer again?
She didn’t know. She wouldn’t know.
And that is what the parasite would feed on. All of the doubt that was rattling around her mind.
Even if she tried to shake it, she knew that it would just come back.
It would rip through her skin in a more visceral way, and she wasn’t sure if she could recover from that.
But the moment she thought about putting her knife down and thought back to when Parson Cham met his end.
To the night, she got to spend with Wander Sibley one last time before ve perished at the hands of someone.
"I don't think that's how the world works,"
But that is how Annie’s world worked.
"Good things happen, and bad things happen. You don't... trade them in, you just get lucky until you don't anymore."
She thought about those words again and again as Wander spoke them, and maybe, just maybe ve did have a point. Maybe Annie just had to keep going, even though everything bad could happen to her. For all she knew, Ripred could have a different plan for her, something that she wouldn’t be able to fulfil if she died here.
And she thought about Wander, smiling as her mind started to clear. The storm passed, and Annie could not believe just how much it turned her world upside down.
However, like a wave crashing down on her, she need to get back up and try again.
Until the moment she couldn’t breathe anymore.
Her eyes snapped forward, following both of the tributes that were left in front of her. Denali did not move from the spot where she had struck Shy down, but Bette was quicker to move.
She remembered a faint chuckle come from her lips, and Annie couldn’t help but smile. Even in the most serious moment, gallow’s humor always seemed to find a way to make people laugh.
But that wasn’t important, what was, was the fact that her worst fears did come to life, as Bette had hopped up two axes in the air. The moment Annie noticed this, her knife fell to the side, not sure what was going to come of this attack.
Annie could admit that she was impressed, but it was going to take a lot more for her to be caught off guard.
The moment the knife left Bette’s hand, she bent backwards, giving herself enough leverage to handspring out of the way. She wanted to say something to her, as the knife disappeared into the ether. However, this was not the place.
Annie also didn’t care anymore.
It was a two verse one, and she needed to even the odds.
She looked at Bette, and as much as she wanted to sink her last flaming knife into her, just to show her not to mess with a girl that had trained for this, forcefully or not.
Bette would have to wait.
And so she sidestepped the girl from one, and made eye contact with Denali, who seemed to be distracted with whatever was going on in her mind.
And she launched that knife, Wander’s words echoing in her head, ricocheting every negative thought out of her mind.
She lost the one thing that she needed to hold on to here.
Hope.
But Wander Sibley’s words brought it back to her.
And now she needed to cherish it.
Like her life depended on it.
