Kind, Gentle, Brave.
Topher Valentine was very familiar with these words, they are pretty much the principals of his life. Growing up in District 2, surrounded by careers alike, being kind and gentle won't get you very far. Topher (short for Christopher) like any other child of District 2, was put in academies as a young child, to hone in on his skills that could be essential to him in the arena. As a child it was very obvious to others that Topher had a knack for glaives. It was as if it was an extension of himself, he could fend off two to three trainers at a time with a glaive on his own. It wasn't uncommon for Topher to be subject to teasing from other careers, though. He was often the victim of jokes, for his kindness. In school Topher wouldn't hang out with the career crowd, he'd opt for the "lesser" crowds, your technology nerds, and the weaklings who were too afraid to go to the academies and train for the games.
Topher wasn't a stranger to the careers though, they liked him, and often their teasing was a result of tough love. Topher had already proven himself many times in the training arenas and various tournaments held around District 2, often placing very high in the tournaments. When he was younger, he would be able to handle himself against an eighteen year old in a tournament, his weapon of choice? A glaive, always. People described his style as a form of art, at just seventeen it had seemed Topher was very close to mastering the glaive. This in turn, gives him a style of arrogance on the battlefield. Its not obnoxious arrogance, either. Its subtle, and gentle arrogance. A "put down your weapon, I don't want to hurt you" kind of arrogance. He carries himself well on the battlefield, and those who know Topher, know that he would kill if he had to.
Topher had grown up in a family of 5, his mother, father, sister and brother. They were all the same age, and each of them performed well in the academy. Topher usually stood out though. He towered over his siblings at 6'2. Each of them respectively were about 5'10. His build allows for conclusive leverage in a fight, and he has an intimidating leanness to him. This was most likely a result of being fed well his entire life. His opponents often gave in due to frustration when facing Topher. His height allowed him to reach them from distances where they were unable to strike him back. This was what made Topher so lethal.
Growing up in District 2 went about as expected for Topher and his family, there was occasionally some domestic issues between his father and mother. But that didn't phase any of the Valentine children. Topher was the only scholar of the group. His siblings were almost worthless in their studies, he says they rely too much on the prospect of winning the games. Its true, what if they don't get reaped, after all? Sure they could volunteer, but his father doesn't want that for his children.
Topher sports light brown hair, that falls in waves over his forehead. Complimented by a pair of dark green eyes (the ladies love it). His voice, deep, thick, but quiet. If you were to strip him down to his underwear you would see a lean build, with some muscle here and there. But Topher doesnt flaunt muscle, he flaunts speed. You have to be fast if you want to live, and everyone with a brain knows that. He has a nose that compliments his face well, and skinny lips, that usually are sealed shut. He has a longer neck, and a pair of long, gaunt legs.
Topher is very clever, often finding ways of outsmarting his opponents. He prefers it this way, brute strength can only get you so far. He uses a lot of his time in the academy flying through obstacle courses, climbing walls, scaling rope ladders, leaping from platform to platform. Being quick on your feet can save your life, so thats why he does it.
Topher may appear to be flawless on the outside, but his insides are what hurt him the most. He has gentle PTSD, from nights where his father would be belligerently drunk, and hit his mother. Often times Topher and his brother would step in, to defend his mother. His father eventually stopped drinking, because his drinking was tearing the family apart. Topher has dabbled in alcoholic beverages before, and has felt evil every time hes done it. He tries to stay as far away as he can from it.
At the moment, though, Tophers life is as complacent as it can be. That seems to be just the way he likes it.
always love seeing a Career who's genuinely kind, but also genuinely serious about the training--whether he ends up in the Games or doing something else with his life, it'll be interesting to see how he chooses to handle that balance.
