The Effects of Childhood Trauma & Alzheimer's Disease on Female Adolescence from District Six
Thyme, B.

Abstract

Alzheimer's Disease is a neurodegenerative disease caused by apoptotic damage to neuron cells. It can cause extreme stress and physical deterioration to patients and patient caregivers alike. This study examines the effects of Alzheimer's Disease on families of patients suffering from it. We use subject 15-year old Barbados Thyme from district six to determine the side effects of being a part-time caregiver of a mother suffering from early onset Alzheimer's Disease. It was determined that this can cause extreme psychological changes within adolescence.

Introduction

Alzheimer's Disease is a genetic disease that is caused by the buildup of amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides derived from transmembrane protein amyloid precursor protein. This buildup causes chronic stress in the endoplasmic reticulum, which leads to a stress response called the unfolded protein response (UPR). Chronic use of the UPR can result in an apoptotic response, which results in cell death in neurons. Because neurons cannot regenerate like other cells can, this can lead to irreversible damage to brain function leading to the neurodegenerative response found in Alzheimer's Disease. There is no known, definitive cure to Alzheimer's Disease that is accessible to District Six.

Early onset Alzheimer's occurs in patients under the age of 65. While most patients suffering from early onset Alzheimer's suffer from the common form, a rarer, genetic form occurs in the Thyme family which progresses much quickly and earlier than the common form of the disease. Symptoms include forgetting dates or important things, loss of time perception, frequently getting lost, changes in mood, and poor judgement. Most patients who are diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease only have a life expectancy of five years after their diagnosis

Family conflicts are often common when dealing with a patient with Alzheimer's Disease. This can include, but is not limited to, end of life care, finances, treatment, and living arrangements. Most caregivers live in the community with the patient, and one third of caregivers are daughters of the patient. StatsPanem estimates that 90% of treatment costs is bore by the families of the patient. Health care burnout can often occur in caretakers of those with Alzheimer's Disease - leading to other stress-related illnesses, such as heightened levels of anxiety, depression, problems focusing in school and work, higher risk of blood clots, and elevated blood pressure levels.

In this review article, we will examine the effects of Alzheimer's Disease on 15-year old Barbados Thyme from District Six. She is the part-time caretaker to her mother, Dominica Thyme, and takes on many of the responsibilities caring for her mother who suffers from the genetic disease.

Methods

We begin this review by starting with a young couple, Dominica Pollux and Reginald Thyme. Have this couple meet in high school and fall in love. Next, we marry them. Obtain a job working as an administrative assistant at the mayor's office for Dominica, and a job at the college as a professor for Reginald. Next, impregnate Dominica with their first child, a boy named Antigua Thyme. Three years later, conceive again, this time a girl named Barbados Thyme.

Live happy, nuclear life for majority of the children's adolescence. Proceed to bring up two incredibly smart children, who show extreme promise in their future endeavours. Eventually, note decline in Dominica's mental capabilities. Such decline includes forgetting Barbados' birthday, missing work because she thinks its the weekend, and wandering out into town in the middle of the night. Go to doctor, and determine that Dominica is suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. Go on medical leave at mayor's office. Record extreme declination in health over short period of time.

Observations

It was observed that such declination resulted in Antigua Thyme dropping out of high school to become the full-time caretaker of Dominica Thyme, resulting in his dreams to become a nurse to fail. It was also noted that Reginald Thyme began to be the primary source of income for the family, leading to a declination in finances for the family. It was also observed that Barbados Thyme began engrossed in research surrounding Alzheimer's Disease, obsessively drowning herself in research articles and science. It was noted that Barbados began to lose crucial social skills from her early adolescence due to lack of development and an avoidance of social situations, thus resulting in social awkwardness and anxiety surrounding socializing. Barbados also began to develop depression as a result of the trauma surrounding the loss of her mother's neurogenerative abilities.

Results

The results of this review come down to a once healthy, happy young girl turn into a obsessive, socially awkward teenager who rarely did much besides write in her journal about research. Barbados began to develop irregular eating and sleeping habits, resulting in fatigue at school and extreme weight loss. Her health began to reflect the stress of being her mother's part-time caretaker - including but not limited to, dizziness, nausea and blurred vision. Barbados' physical condition is recorded to be not ideal. Subject fails to meet any sort of standard in fitness testing. We also recorded that although physically attractive, her shy tendencies often tend to ward off potential friendships or relationships. However, it was also noted that Barbados reacted positively to praise and positivity and often responded with kindness and carefulness. She also displayed extreme empathy and love towards those she was close with.

Conclusions

In this study, we examined the effects of parental Alzheimer's Disease on the children of patients, specifically fifteen year old Barbados Thyme from District Six. We concluded that being a child of a patient of Alzheimer's Disease results in stress-related physiological conditions as well as social avoidance tendencies. Future research can be directed towards determining the genetics related to Alzheimer's Disease, and whether it was passed onto the second generation of Thyme children. In the future, we hope to see Barbados fulfill her goals of being a scientist and gain more confidence with herself and her abilities.
