I feel like if I focus, I can pick out each individual heartbeat with my ears. Different cadences. I think my ears might have gotten pointed. I never used to be able to wiggle them individually. What’s the end game here?

Do they intend for the victor of this games to be a rabid animal on their victory tour? Or maybe winning means you become a mutt yourself and wander a new arena, killing tributes and feasting on their flesh. It actually doesn’t sound that bad.

I—I’m developing a taste for that. Fuckin’A. Urban legend says that people in capitol are a bunch a cannibals—ain’t nothing taboo for the elite. Maybe it’s true. I mean, I’m gonna still want to eat this after, won’t I? I think I might be going crazy. I think I might be something else.

Ha. Imagine that. A gal named Kat becoming a dog. It’s ironic and shit? I’m tired man. Brain feels heavy in my head. I don’t know how much longer I can keep my head on straight. The wolf clawing at the back of my throat wants to be let out.

It won’t be denied anymore. Dad always said I was strong-willed and maybe that’s why I’ve been able to hold out like this. But I can’t anymore. I just can’t. There are gaps in my memory already, man. When the wolf takes over. I think I did something to the bodies yesterday.

There was something strange stuck in my teeth this morning. My fur gets singed and I see red, the red pouring out of the girl from six, the red filling my vision from Fray’s insistence on poking the wolf.

“Last chance Fray.” I growl. “Swing on me one more fuckin’ time, and I’m finishing what you started right here and right now.” I’ve been more than patient with this bitch. How many more times does she think she can interrupt my business before I hit back and tear her head off? Dick around with someone else for once.

But then six spits blood in my face and the world goes away. I can taste her on my tongue—and my tongue feels heavy. Larger than it should be. Its instinct, I don’t choose to do it but my tongue darts out and licks it all off. It shouldn’t be able to reach my eyes but it does and the blood tastes good.

But it’s not enough. It’s not meat.

“S-shoulda r-run.” I hiss, but talking feels hard.

This is the first warm blood I’ve tasted. Not cold or covered in dirt and grass. Oh fuck it hurts—I saw it happen to Andal the other day, but I didn’t think—maybe if I—I’m Katrina Sykes goddammit, I’m an asshole and I know it but I choose what I do—I don’t think I have a choice in this.

A howl erupts out of my throat and I clutch my chest as my ribs crack and widen, shoulders broadening—I can feel the claws that replaced my nails lengthen. My bottom jaw cracks and widens to accommodate more teeth. I double over for a few scant seconds, hearing people shouting about the lake and something slithering out of it.

When I straighten up—I was always tall, but I’ve just gained a few inches of height.

And then—

Katrina Sykes panted, eyes focusing on the prey in front of her. There were two. One smelled of caves and darkness, coppery blood drying in the back of her screeching throat. The other—wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong! She took an unsteady step forward, barely aware that a second pair of claws had shredded her shoes. The growl that came out of her contained no trace of the trash-talking jerkass career, only animal instinct.

She’d been walking a thin line between tribute and muttation for five days, and the beast had finally taken over completely. She stared dimly at the blood covered sword that her forepaw was clenching in a death grip and warbled a sound of confusion, trying to remember what it was for. Her pack brother was holding something long. A tail with a claw on it. Katrina roared at the prey that smelled like neither bat nor wolf and swung her tailclaw at it with the intent to slit it from navel to sternum.

He exists as a poltergeist in the land of the living, invisible to everyone and drifting through the fight with the remnants of his own dying heart in his wake. His axe swings are unsteady, weak, silver held in shaking wrists with loose grip because of what occurs in the empty space between his swings and the bloodshed around him.

The Lake roars to life, shadowy tendrils bursting from the water and he gasps when his flesh is suddenly torn in two, muscles and sinew alike falling to the ground in a sheet of red. He feels every piece of it in utter agony and grim, heightened senses meaning the sudden shock that roars through his veins goes from a wave to a tsunami, a gentle breeze to a tornado.

He swipes back at the water on instinct, only feeling the crash of a tentacle as his weapon goes straight through it and out the other side as the Lake retreats once more. His eyes glare at the world like it hasn't treated him poorly enough already, looking around at the shadowy walls that still exist as a barrier from their escape before he swings outwards towards the nearest tribute.

I'm a river of red, feverously dripping from my abdomen. Pale faced and teeth clenched I drag my sword in the black sand, drawing a jagged line as I retreat slowly away from Katrina and her pack. They stand there defiant, towering figures with canine grins, and all because I don't have enough in me to wipe them from this beach.

Katrina's words drool out, barely comprehensible as the animal inside continues to consume what humanity is left within her. She's all but lost, like most of them, animals and monsters, with me alone in the middle, the only one here who's still human.

I've been here before, twisting and turning in a crossfire of bullets and insults, just hoping to make it out alive. A thousand miles away, a thousand years ago. No life worth living, just moving forward chasing the faint hope that one day things might be different. The big what if.

THE LAKE

The creatures are such fragile, fragile things. The lake could break them easily, of course, but that's not its cross to bear. That's not its duty, no. It was not meant to be some brutish savage, breaking apart its toys willy nilly. No, it has too much finesse for that.

So when one creature visibly weakens, the lake opens a pathway, just for her. Yet no sooner has she disappeared into the great beyond does it reinforce its barrier, redouble its efforts, refocus its attention. There are still so many playthings to mess with.

And the lake is nothing if not an equal opportunist. Everyone will get a chance to play with it eventually.

Maybe that's why Cantara hasn't challenged anyone yet.

Maybe that's why she knows the sickly feeling in her gut is why she isn't Alpha.

She doesn't trust that anyone will listen to her.

Chiara turns her attention elsewhere temporarily and Cantara intends to make sure she knows it's a mistake. "Coyote," she names him, voice little more than a murmuring growl, "let's surround her."

Dark fur blends into darker shadows. Half of them might be waifs but Cantara is kin to the night. Not even the lurking creature can touch her. She closes her yellowed eyes to slits and fires her crossbow, angling to scare off the other tributes. And, well, Ace Bellisario is no friend of hers.

Katrina Sykes would have had some snappy comeback for the tributes by her. However, Katrina wasn’t present anymore. The wolf in her brain, the parasitic embryo of DNA encoded into the syringe that had been injected into her six days prior was in control, steering her body on an instinct that was never hers.

The prey had fled it told her, bolted for its den, hiding in a hole in the ground or in a cave, or in a tree. She snorted, dizzy and trying to reorient herself. There was a sudden explosion of pain that wracked her body as a bone broke and fur was singed. The she-wolf fixed her luminous eyes on the perpetrator.

There were words to describe this prey, the one that smelled like a bat. But no wings. Bats were supposed to have wings. The thought was chased away by the lure of the hunt. There was something wrong. The wolf sought for a word tucked away in the recesses of Katrina’s mind. The bat-thing had a name. It is not a bat, not really, a voice whispered to the wolf.
