They left the tent through a back opening and as soon as they stepped outside, Calcifer and Teva were standing alone together in the muffled dark.

There were further festivities happening of course but further away, in the campgrounds shared by the common folk. He began to lead Teva along, taking the knight's hand in his. The pads of his fingers were rough, callused from years of holding weapons. Calcifer's own hands were softer as he had many salves to keep the calluses at bay.

"Come along," he murmured and slipped his fingers in-between Teva's, as if to lock their hands together. Heat tingled up his arm from the contact and Calcifer gazed ahead smiling.

They walked for a few minutes before Calcifer approached a large area fenced with a tall, wood wall. A guard stood at the locked door to get in and Calcifer nodded at them to step aside.

"If you show fear, you'll deserve the fate that earns you," Cal warned, before pushing the door open.

Howl lay sleeping in the centre of the space, his silver scales looked like pearl in the moonlight and Calcifer sighed, as if he had been holding his breath for days. He was always more comfortable when near Howl. Unlike most, a Targaryen was naturally soothed just being near their mounts.

"Champion," he teased with the nickname and then turned to look at Teva, "this is Howl."

Calcifer's hand was soft. Unbelievably soft. Teva worried that squeezing it might break his princely bones, so he kept his grip gentle as their fingers entwined. After they walked out of the tent, nobody called out to them or followed them to question their disappearance. Just a champion sharing a conversation with the princess' brother! Nothing strange about that at all.

Teva allowed silence to consume their time together. He usually couldn't shut the fuck up, but he was enjoying this. Opening his big mouth would probably ruin it. He didn't know much about the prince's interests, and planned to learn what he could through observation. He was already further than he had ever imagined - hell, he thought he would just cast a few winks during the tournament and be on his way after someone dismounted him. But then he actually won the fucking thing, and who was he to pass up a unique opportunity?

As the destination became clear, Teva swallowed any anxiety that threatened to bubble in his chest. If he was about to meet a fucking dragon, he truly did run risk of being killed. Don't show fear, said the prince. Fuckin' easy for him to say!

He refused to back out now. Risk or not, he had never seen a dragon in person before. It was rare to catch a Targaryen flying, and unheard of to see a dragon up close. He didn't know what to expect. He thought they all looked the same, with deep green or brown scales and terrifying eyes. Calcifer's was....beautiful. It glistened silver. How was that possible?

"Shit..." he breathed, and then realized that probably wasn't the proper thing to say when being shown a majestic beast that represented their whole House.

"Uh, I meant to say he is pretty. And terrifying." And amazing. It was also asleep, and Teva dared not wake it from its slumber. That felt like a great way to get burned alive. "You seriously ride this thing? How many people have you killed with it?" It was more curiosity than fear that drove the questions.

He watched Teva closely, almost hungry for what would come next. He was curious too, most men would try to hide it but would be terrified but Teva had so far kept Calcifer guessing on how he would react to anything.

He found himself holding his breath, some small part of him wanting Teva to look at Howl and see the beauty that Calcifer saw in the magnificent creature.

And there it was, awe, once again so evident on his face that Cal had to look away for a moment, he didn't want Teva to see him blush. To Calcifer who had to share every small thing in his life with thousands of people, that was almost too intimate. Even though Teva was complimenting Howl, it felt like he was complimenting Calcifer himself. Despite the way he looked down on the knight's simplicity, it had managed to disarm him once again.

Calcifer let go of Teva to approach Howl, hand reaching for the snout of the dragon. Howl looked to be asleep but Calcifer could sense that he was awake and when he rested his hand on the Dragon's scales, Howl opened one eye and blew gently on Cal.

"We have killed many," Calcifer said, not looking at Teva. This fact was just another thing that set them apart. For every man Teva could take down, Cal could take down ten. Like his sister before him, last year during the small uprising in the West, Cal had learned to grow numb to it. Easy when the other choice was madness.

"But Howl is more than just a war machine," Cal said, looking over his shoulder at Teva, "He is as you put it, pretty, terrifying, and my best friend." He ran his hand over the dragon's scales again and then held a hand out to Teva.

Cal grinned, "Would you dare come closer?" he asked. It wasn't a true question, no one in their right mind would willingly approach a dragon other than a Targaryen.

"Many" was such a vague answer, but maybe it wasn't easy to count when breathing fire upon hoards of enemies. Teva had attempted to count his kills and failed. It was difficult to focus on something so trivial in the heat of battle. He did, however, know how many men he has flayed. Probably not something he would reveal to the prince. Too unromantic.

Teva wondered how it was possible to be friends with such a beast. He could understand dogs or horses, but a whole dragon? How does one bond without fearing its enormous jaws and searing flames? To tame such a creature was an incredible feat on its own, and supposedly only someone with Targaryen blood could accomplish. Even then, Teva had heard old tales of Targaryens dying during attempts. He was tempted to ask how they met.

"I would dare," he said, yet part of him whispered a silent complaint about how the dragon should've been left asleep. No sense in angering it!

He approached anyway, slowly. "No sudden movements, right? I don't know what angers a dragon."

Calcifer watched silently as Teva actually stepped forward, he was caught off guard again by his choice and that was almost too many times in one meeting. He marvelled once again, eyes running over the other boy's body as if he could read his thoughts through his gait alone.

Why? he wanted to ask in that moment.

He'd never met a man before Teva who put his ego above his own safety in the same way that he was doing. Part of him wanted to finally write him off as simple in that moment, but he couldn't, not yet. Despite his actions, there was a flame of wisdom behind the other boy's gaze that Calcifer couldn't help but be intrigued by.

There was also the fact that he was rather handsome.

He stood, quietly, waiting for Teva to get closer before he reached out and dragged him the last few steps closer. His hand around the other boy's wrist, he raised his other hand away from Howl and placed it against Teva's cheek. "I'm going to get my scent on you first," he told Teva quietly, face mere inches away from his, "It'll be easier that way."
