Leianna "Lei" Phiabac

Leianna is a curvy figure, balanced hips, breasts that are neither too small nor too large, and long muscular legs that match her arms. She is a woman and many men have dreamed about that body, sliding their hands over it, but Leianna isn’t that kind of woman. Leianna keeps her body curvy and devoid of fat not for a man or even herself, but for the good of the District.

Stretched over that body comes smooth, lightly tanned skin, marred by scars and a small mole just under her left eye. Even in her age, Leianna’s only wrinkles appear on her forehead, just in between her thin, barely-there eyebrows. Even in her age, Leianna’s only wrinkles come from years of stern looks and scowls. On this skin, rests the rest of Leianna’s features.

The immediate feature that draws the eyes of those who come across Leianna are her lips. And not because they’re peach-colored and full, her bottom lip and upper lip the same size, but rather because from through those lips, Leianna is most likely snapping something out at someone. The next feature that is most prominent on Lei’s oval-shaped face are her sharp, almond-shaped eyes, which are a deep, deep brown and can freeze anyone in their tracks from their intensity. Her tiny, flailing nostrils on a small, perfectly centered nose are less impressive.

And finally, one’s eyes might travel to Lei’s short, cropped jet-black hair. Wavy, yet contained, Lei’s hair hides her tiny ears, ears that are almost flat to her head. It used to be long, luxurious, sweeping down her back, but a razor to it had taken care of that. However, this left her to her insecurities, no long hair to hide behind, thrusting her hairy arms and thick, man-like fingers into full view. But, if Lei had long since come to terms with it. With budgeted time to prepare herself, she found the hygiene of her feet, toenails perfectly trimmed, anything in between her toes cleaned out, and her legs, smoothly shaved, much more important than her hands and arms.

Lei has never had any cause to dress nicely. Her Peacekeeper uniform does her well, clinging to her curves, accenting her thrust out hip, hand clasped firmly on it. Usually, she’ll take her helmet off, so whoever under her gaze can bear the brunt of her full scowl, eyes narrowed, lips pursed. And at this pose, she likes to stay.

On the surface

Lei is tough as leather. She refuses to stand for any crap and drives new Peacekeepers into the ground. Still, they respect her. Easy to hate, but just as easy to respect, to love even. For she may drive them into the ground, but she’s always the one reaching out the hand to help them back up…if they’re willing to keep trying. She’s strict. There will be no stepping out of line in her District: not from the citizens nor her fellow Peacekeepers. And if one breaks a rule, she’s willing to dole out the punishment.

Lei can come off as cold and aloof when people first meet her. She speaks with a straight-back and a raised nose, peering down at the other, eyes narrowed, suspicion clouding her face heavily. She could make anyone cower, fall back and cower. She’s a model Peacekeeper. Powerful, strict and tough.

Deeper
Fair. Lei is fair. She’s willing to hear anyone out before she punishes them. Never cruel, she’s fair in how she punishes. She may seem like she had judged you within the first few seconds of knowing you, but secretly, she hasn’t. She’s judging you right now…weighing you in her even, worn hands. Though you can’t say she’s kind-her speaking style is rather harsh and a bit cool-once she’s weighed you positively, she treats you with the respect she feels is fit.

She is one of the bravest Peacekeepers you will come by. She will readily run into that burning house and come out to tell the tale. She doesn’t brag. She keeps quiet, sullen, unapproachable. But, Lei is the approaching type. She doesn’t sit back, she takes initiative and can be quite scary when angry. Her anger is fierce, biting. Seldom released in full, usually hidden on the fringe of her strictness, but frightening all the same.

Deepest.

Loyal. Lei is loyal. But, only to a few. Those closest to her, she will never turn her back on them. She’s an amazing friend, once someone’s opened her up.

The sad thing is: seldom do people do.

Scarred knees. Age 0 to age 11

Many said she rushed into things. She was old enough for Peacekeeper training, something she'd dreamed about for years, but she wanted a husband and she wanted a baby.

She had all three within the next year.

Leianna was born to proud parents, Lila and Nat, on the twenty third of March. By the thirtieth, Lila had left for training and by the Leianna's first birthday, Lila had left District Two to Peacekeeper in the other Districts.

Nat brought up his daughter, but there were some things in a child's life that a mother is needed for and the other kids teased Leianna for her imperfect hair and imperfect clothing and imperfect lunches and Leianna found herself in the nurse's office, chewing on her lower lip as the nurse bandaged up her bleeding knees from chasing the kids until she fell.

Every year, Lila had to do the same thing for her daughter when she volunteered as added guard for the Reaping in District Two and was relocated there for the time being. Every year, Lei came running out of the house to her to be lifted into her arms not before stumbling and falling. And then again, Nat would have to do it when Lila left again and Lei fell to her knees in anguish. But, Lila was a Peacekeeper and Lei knew what that meant. Lei couldn’t be her daughter as long as she was. She wasn’t allowed.

Her knees never healed correctly.

Scarred feet. Age 11 to 17

Had she been there, Lila would've warned Lei that as she got older, she would begin to notice boys or they might notice her.

Leianna didn't need telling so. She noticed him first and she followed him barefoot. It was much easier and much quieter. Down side streets, up hills, under bridges, eyes always on him, trying to figure out where he would go next, never speaking, just following. Still, he noticed her. She had lead feet.

"Let me walk with you, Lei. I don't want you going alone."

He was perfect to her. Water to her fire, reason to her irrational. Hand to her hand. And suddenly, she was fifteen years old and they were walking around the entire District, the same paths he always took, the paths she always followed, the paths they still kept to.

"Lei, don't walk alone. Let me walk with you."

Down side streets, up hills, under bridges and this one was particularly dark and he stopped, Lei nearly walking into him and he gripped her waist, pulling her close so suddenly that for a moment, they both faltered, both wondering and then...his lips were crashing onto hers.

On that day, Lei flew. Lei soared. Lei didn't even notice the pieces of broken glass that she'd stepped on with bare feet. Lei only noticed him.

Scarred chin. Age 17 and four months.

Crashing into the bathroom, Lei swiped the tears hastily from her eyes. The tears were useless, she knew it too. She could cry all she'd like and that wouldn't change a thing.

Foolish, foolish girl.

The scissors were right above the sink and with sweaty hands, she grabbed them and shoved a chunk of hair, the hair he'd loved so much, between the two blades. Her heart was racing, her eyes barely seeing her tear-streaked face in the mirror.

All she could see was his face, his terrible lips, the lips she let touch hers, telling her the terrible truth.

"I-I can't stay with you...I'm sorry...I like someone else."

Someone else. Her heart had dropped into her stomach and suddenly, she felt light-headed.

"Lei, you don't look so good. Let me walk you home."

"Get away."

Snip. The first cut and her hair was up to her chin. He'd loved her hair so much. He didn't love her anymore. Snip. Snip. Snip-"Oh!" she'd nicked her chin and blood was sweeping out of the wound, but Lei grit her teeth and forced herself to ignore it and keep snipping.

Actually, she didn't even feel the pain. She was finally feeling those pieces of glass. Except, this time, it penetrated her heart and it hurt like hell.


Scarred cheek. Age 25 and eleven months.

Nat begged her not to go, but she knew she had to. She had to get out of the District. Away from him. She was going to follow in her mother's footsteps. She was strong enough. She was brave enough. She’d already stayed behind for too many years, envying the white suits, the white helmets, the white gloves…and finally, she just had to do it and to training, she went.

The day was hot and sultry. "Today, we'll be practicing tackling. If you find yourself attacked and for some reason, unarmed, this just may save your life."

In the long line of Peacekeepers-in-training, Leianna was the only girl. A female Peacekeeper wasn't uncommon, but Lei was just in an all-male class. She was paired with another young man, Cassius Clayburn, who towered over her and they were the first pair to go, circled around by the other trainees in the courtyard. In the heat, flies buzzed around Lei's ears, but she ignored them, focusing only on Cassius's smirking face as he whispered , "You better just drop now, little girl. I really don't want to hurt you."

Lei rolled her eyes back, hands tightening into fists. "We'll see about that one."

Their trainer blew the whistle for them to begin and at once, Cassius moved forward, but Lei was quick. Ducking under his arm, she grabbed it, twisted it back and tackled him to the ground, holding his arm tightly as he howled in pain. Instantly, laughter erupted around the courtyard as Lei grinned, swung herself off of Cassius and offered him her hand. He didn't accept it and Leianna walked away, triumphant, stomach filled with butterflies in knowing her mother would be proud.

The terror came later that night. Leianna woke up in her room with a heavy weight on her chest and the sour stench of sweat in her nostrils

"You humiliated me today, little girl." His speech was trembling with low anger, but the hand holding the knife to her throat was steady. Her stomach turned inside out, yet Lei just clenched her teeth at him.

"I didn't humiliate you," she retorted, "You did that all yourself."

Two quick slashes and blood was streaming down her cheek and Cassius pushed himself off of her. "Don't let it happen again."

Leianna would later stand beside him as they both received their official Peacekeeper uniforms. She refused to look at him, but the scars on her cheek prickled with painful memories.

Scarred knuckles. Age 42 and six months.
The glass shattered under her beating hands, but she hardly noticed the sharp pain embedding itself into her skin. The pain in her hands was nothing compared to that in her heart.

Dead. Dead. Dead. Her mother was dead. The mother she spent her childhood about, the mother who was stationed in District Three while Lei was stationed in District Five. The mother she only saw occasionally. The mother that never meant much to her, the mother she looked up to as a role model, but never saw below the surface. Dead. Dead. Dead.

She was older, they told her. She was sick. She was worn out. The sickness was swift. She hardly felt any pain. She went peacefully, they told her. She said she loved her husband and daughter, they told her. She died loving you, they told her. Still, that didn’t stop Lei from getting back to her house and beating her fists against the window until it shattered and blood was sliding so swiftly down her hands and raining to the ground.

Dead. Dead. Dead.And her heart was barely beating and it seemed silent when she collapsed into bed to cry, nursing her bloody hands. Something inside of her had broken off. The part of her that always wanted her mother in her life. The part of her that now knew that could never be. She was dead. Dead. Dead.

Lila Phiabac had been one of the most respected Peacekeepers. In her District, District Three, crime had decreased, her Peacekeepers were seldom injured, and there were hardly repeat offenses. A criminal of District Three never committed the same crime twice after Lila was through with him. Standing in the line of Peacekeeper-hopefuls, Lei hadn’t been surprised when the trainer had paused at her name.

“Phiabac? Are you related to Lila Phiabac by any chance?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Good one, she is. Are you anything like her?”

I hope so, sir.”

“Well, I guess we’ll find out soon enough.”

When she finished her training, Leianna never got a straight answer on that one.

With bandaged hands, Lei picked up the phone from her bed the next day and listened as she was offered the position as Head Peacekeeper of District Three, the position her mother once held.

And she, sniffling slightly, but wiping the tears from her eyes, accepted.

Scarred Soul. Age …
Peacekeeping. Since accepting her mother’s spot, Leianna Phiabac has never strayed from her duties, never as much as glancing at men, never as much as imagining having children. Leianna has always kept the Peacekeepers under her in line, always kept a tight hold over the District before her, has always abided by the Peacekeeper vows she took.

And since her accepting her mother’s spot, Leianna Phiabac, every Sunday morning, gets up early, gathers up the flowers from her half-dying garden and walks to her mother’s grave and if she needs it, asks for assistance.

And wonders, if she’s anything like her mother at all.
