Hurt and bleeding we have to stand and watch the rest of the line fight and get their beating. Some of the men and women in line actually put up a good fight while others end up just as sore and broken as Nr. 1 or Devroux. As long as he can stand he's not allowed to sit down or be treated by some sort of medic. They make us witness their superiority and make it perfectly clear what happens if we disobey orders.
The show comes to an abrupt end when a wiry man in his 50ies steps on the scene. he moves like a true warrior and has no trouble whatsoever to evade every single punch but in return places several well placed kicks and strikes with the edge of his hand to the 'trainers' throat until he doubles over and doesn't get up anymore. A cheer escapes the crowd before it's announced that 'training is over' and everybody is supposed to report to the sick bay next to our sleeping quarters.
"Nr. 5,6,11,16 and 17. report to Captain Norris after lunch."
& -that's me. It's not very hard to guess why this group of people was chosen. We were the only decent fighters, but what they want from us remains to be seen.
Most of the new recruits can't walk back by themselves and need help from us few, who are still in decent shape. I pull Devroux's arm around my shoulder and tell him. "I'll help you get back. Did you injure your leg or something?"
It takes us three times as long to make our way back along the narrow overgrown path and finally get out of the humidity into the cool underground building, where we are directed to one room, which is slowly filling with people who have been beaten up by our trainers. It#s really a disgusting display. "How is this any better than what the capitol does to the tributes. They train them and then send them out to be killed." I growl angrily while I take in the mass of bloodied people.
