Fawn had been through watching a cow giving birth, she had to stick her hand in the... you know area and because of that she had got pretty use to gross stuff. Having to pull out poop from dog’s mouth, digging through throw up to find bad things. But none of that compared to what she was watching now.

Jacks mouth opened wide and the throw up came spitting out. It spread across Fawns hand,the doctor barley even noticed. He was too busy cutting open Jack to get something out of him to notice this. Fawn eyes started to glass up, her nose hurt from the horrible smell and her hands felt like they were melting!

But oh he was not done yet. Fawn felt a piercing pinch on her hands. His nails were clawing into her hand that was too sweaty and dirty, she could not take it. The warm blood mixed with the throw out came out of her hand, she could not stand it. Her stomach was going worst, her head spun. A loud wail came out of her mouth. Tears started to flow; it was too much for a fourteen year old girl.

But his hand let go, Fawn felt relief. The nails that were once taking out blood from her released from their firm cut and relaxed as Jack started to go out. His eyes closing, blood all around him.

Fawn could not let this happen. He just lost his wife and now he was going to lost himself. Where was the rest of the help?
She wanted to scream out for help, but her voice would not let her.

She wanted to dash out but something made her stay put and deal with this mess. The only thing that could make this worst was if he died, but Fawn would not let that happen. A woman ran out quickly followed by his husband, but Fawn stayed
put and let her mouth do the work.

“Doctor!"

She tried to scale her voice over all the madness that was going on, but it was not working. She sniffed as the tears ran down her eyes, this was worst than ever.

"Jack it’s okay, stay with me!"

She grabbed his hand and started to rapidly pat it. A lump was caught in her throat as she spoke. Why was this happening to me?

Right this very minute I just wish for one thing with all my heart. I want to pass out and wake up when this torture is over. As if the mental torture of loosing my loved one and unborn children isn’t enough. Why me? What have I done to deserve this? What has ma family done to deserve loosing it all? Life in district 10 seems simply unfair. We go through hardship and pain while people in the capitol thrive in luxuries and get to keep their loved ones plus ours.

The doctor has finally found the bullett and removed it and is now trying to stop the bleeding while I’m slowly blacking out. At least this time I’m a little lucky. The vomit of somebody else hits the floor next to me but I’m already too far gone to even notice...only one thing sticks in my mind...who is that strange girl?

Beads of sweat a running from the doctors face into his mask while he’s breathing heavily and staring through a pair of goggles into the mess of my intestines. He’s calling for clamps and finally resorts to soldering the ruptured organ. When he’s done he stares down at his work undecided whether it’ll do or not. Two more tries and he shrugs. “That’s all I can do.”

I’ve passed out, thank goodness, because the smell of burnt flesh in the room is assaulting everybodies sense and would probably have put me over the edge.

It takes another 15 minutes to stitch it all up and then he announces. “Now we can only sit and wait. He’ll need antibiotics in case he survives. Do you have enough tesserae?”
His red eyes search everybody's faces.

The doctor tells me that there's a cloth to clean up with, but right now, I don't care. I'm not bleeding to death - all I had was a nose bleed. Jack, on the other hand, has a gaping bullet wound in his belly, and I know full well how bad a gunshot hurts. My wrist stub absentmindedly reaches up to rub the large, puffy, pink scar on my shoulder. You feel like you're on fire. You feel like you're being torn in half. I can't imagine what it's like to be shot in your belly, though. I was hit where there were no vital organs, but Jack? There's a huge chance he could die.

I obey the doctor and pin Jack's legs down as best I can with only a wrist nub and half of a hand. Some girl suddenly comes in to help by holding down Jack's arm. I've seen some pretty gruesome things in my short life, so Jack vomiting and the doctor digging through his flesh doesn't bother me. The cries of agony, though - they do damage to you mentally. I try to block them out, but they're overwhelming. I can't do anything to help Jack either, so I'm left to just hold him down.

Luckily things seem to go smoothly. The stranger girl tells Jack to hang in there, and while I don't know her and feel defensive over Jack, she appears to have good intentions, so I let her go. It's crazy to think that ever since I've started using dog-like sounds to communicate, I feel that I've been acting like one, too. I've become very protective over friends like Jack, Felix, and Elixir. I've learned to trust my instincts and even my sense of smell.

But then the doctor asks if the Lexingtons have any tesserae. Jack just lost Nonnie to the Games, he lost his kids, and now the guy is asking for tesserae. The Lexingtons are already having such a shitty day, why demand things from them?

I could offer my Avox services to him... that way they won't have to pay anything.

[/color] But what would the doctor think of me? An Avox here in District 10? Living under the Lexington's roof for a few days? I'm a runaway Avox - I could get Jack's family in deep trouble too, so I keep quiet and just turn to look at Jack's parents, wondering how they'll respond.

It was only now that Jack was progressing to calming down that Fawn noticed a boy holding Jacks legs. His dark hair hung over his face as he bend over his legs. Fawn still kept her hand locked within Jack’s hand even though he had let go. The throw up still coated her hand but she was afraid to move it now or something might happen. The blood was draining slowly out of her hand from the blockage of throw up, it was all to disgusting to even watch. But the stench reached her nose and reminded her of the gross things that covered her hand.

Not only was the throw up and blood grossing Fawn out but the doctors’ manners. With Jack lying on the bed, his wife gone off and his kids where he did not know off the doctor asked for Tessera. That might be the most horrible thing to ask for when your wife gets reaped. In the games, Tessera is tickets to your death but the poorer folks have to take more, just like Fawn had to.

She took a little more this year, a couple but those increased her chances of dying and she really did not want that to happen. But she had to be able to get some more food for her family. Her facial expression did a well job of hiding her real expression. A deep disgust but her face showed a clam emotionless face that did look sick.

“I have a little extra,” She whispered to the doctor from where she stood. Quickly thinking over about the ways she could get more food for her family. She might be able to ask the farmer she works for, he is nice enough. Or she could just stay longer at work that would be better. She did not want to take more of the farmer’s food without not earning. And if that did not work she was sure that her mom and brother could survive a day without extra food, her mom would understand the reason for it. Thinking about, she would probably encourage it.

Fawn grasped Jacks hand harder just to make sure he was still there. He was passed out but someone could easily mistake that for dad. Her eyes still slightly watered from the stench and sight of blood but she held on, making sure to hear the doctors answer.

The old man's grey eyes met hers as he nodded. "Good. Your friend will need everything you've got. The more you have the more things I can organize on the black market: Antibiotics, morphling..."

He turned around to see my father bring in my mother, who is pale as the wall behind her, with a protective arm around her. "Is my son alive?" She looks at me, passed out but still shaking.

The pig headed man nods but double checks my pulse to make sure he's right. "Barely. His pulse is very weak. The next few hours are critical ...if only we had something to substitute for the blood he lost. In the Capitol they have IVs with a solution that brings you back on your feet so fast...oh well, here we don't. I'm not a surgeon as I said."
Suddenly his sweaty face lights up.
"Does anybody here have the same blood type? That would help a lot."

All of us are tested when we are born and the capitol keeps a record of our cromosomes, blood type, every bit of knowledge they need to reap the right kid.

My mother and father exchange sad glances. "His brother used to but he'd dead. No." then their eyes wander from the girl to the avox. "Which one do you have. Jack needs A negative."
Pleading with the rest of the people in the room to say that their type matches and they are willing to help they hold hands, staying away from me as if I had the plaque.

I'm oblivious to what danger I'm in. I'm out cold for what seems to be a long time when in reality it"s only minutes until I surface through a red hot lava stream burning every inch of my body, tearing and ripping t my flesh, into reality, which doesn't feel much better, just a whole lost colder and more desperate. I only manage to open one eye and croak "Noree..." before I go under the lava again, screaming without a sound for her.

My eyes shift their gaze from the girl, to the doctor, and then to Jack's parents. And while the Lexingtons - and this girl, who says she has extra tesserae - are giving up tesserae, the doctor says that he can get it off the black market. The black market - where there's an abundance of thieves and con men. For all I know, this portly fellow could be a robber. I narrow my eyes at him, but given the situation, he's all we've got, apparently. I mean, I know quite a bit about medicine, but there's nothing I can do. I decide to trust this doctor; Jack's parents trust him enough to bring their only son here, so why should I disapprove of their judgment?

I lift my arms off of Jack's legs. Since the "surgery" is over, there's really no need to pin him down. I set my hand on the table, poking my wrist stub at the edge of the table as I listen to them all conversing.

When the doctor says that Jack needs blood, I have to suppress a snort. No doubt about that. But he needs A negative. I try to think back to what I was taught about blood at the Uprising meetings. Certain types of blood can be given to only certain people. There's only one type that can be given to everyone, but that type can only receive its own. I also think back to the few Reapings I was a part of. The people at the table pricking your finger as you arrived, marking off your information. I remember looking down at the paper, and underneath my name was a simple "O-." But can he receive it?

[/color] I'm not sure, but Jack's dying. It's worth a shot.

I raise my hand, looking at the doctor. I can't necessarily tell him what blood type I am - and frankly, I'm terrified that he'll turn in the Lexingtons for me being with them when he finds out I'm an Avox - but if he'll at least give me a chance to write it down....

My bloody nose.[/color] I glance down at the blood that's drying on my chest. I lick one of my fingers, rub it on the blood that's on my skin, and then scrawl out an "O-" on the table at Jack's feet.

Wiping the back of his gloved hand over his forehead gives an odd look to the brown haired guy with the bloody nose. "Did you bite your tongue, too?"
The doctor doesn't seem to be the sharpest tool in the shed or he is simply not expecting to come across an avox in district 10, who is walking among ordinary people so casually.

Then his eyes fall onto the letter Devroux has scribbled in blood: O. He gives a string nod, which makes his double chin wobble and sighs before he places his hand on the young mans shoulder. "Good, good. O can be given to anybody. Yous ure? because if your wrong you"ll be killing your friend."

Before the avox can answer he mutters something about supplies in the back room and walks out leaving my mother, father and the other two alone with his patient.

My mothers eyes meet Devrouxs with so much hope in them they almost sparkle. A sad smile plays on her lips while she"s hanging on to the only hope she's got left.

There are a few older supplies in a room behind the bathroom, which hardly ever are needed. It can't hurt to roam through them and see if there is anything useful.
The doctor comes back with a set of needles and tubes, then orders Devroux to sit down and roll up his sleeve.
Without much warning he sticks a needle into his arm. Soon bright red liquid flows through a tube into a bag.

My mothers watches me tightly and suddenly whispers. "I can't see him breath anymore."
With one hand the doctor feels for my puls and confirms that I'm still there.

A short sting makes me alert enough to open one eye. At first everything is blurry so I close it again but I can feel a warm sensation in my right arm. I can hear peoples voices but can't open my eyes. And to be honest I don't want to open them to this world of pain and sorrow. I stay half alert until I hear I finally pass out again.

Hours later I wake up in a dark room. For a moment I have no idea where I am or what happened. I must be in bed. My hand feels for Noreen next to me but there's nothing. Not even a matress. Blinking against the darkness I sit up or at least try to but fail miserably as something seems to explode in my abdomen, which makes me cry out in pain. Instantly it all comes back to me: The rpodding, being shot, Devroux supportng me, Noreen taking my ring, Noreen getting REAPED.

My eyes dart around and fall onto a face...

I furrow my eyebrows together. Did I bite my tongue? At first I think he means all the blood pouring from my nose, but then I realize he figures this because I haven't said a single word. Best keep it that way. Don't open your mouth so he won't see that I'm tongueless. I make a pointed attempt to keep my mouth shut.

The man sets a hand on my shoulder - probably in some sort of reassuring, grateful way, but if you put it with the words he says, his touch on my skin sends shivers down my spine. I might end up killing Jack?

[/color] I swallow slowly and painfully, like a tongueless mute is always forced to do. What if I'm wrong? What if they didn't teach us right in the Uprising and my blood kills Jack? I'll be responsible for his death - I'll be responsible for the death of Nonnie's husband and the father of her unborn twins-[/color] Before I can give this a second thought, the doctor leaves to find supplies.

I turn my gaze back to the seemingly lifeless Jack, then to the girl, and finally to his parents. His mother's eyes are glowing, but as a result of which emotion, I don't know. Is she scared that I judged my own blood type wrong and could very well be pretty much be giving her only remaining son a lethal injection? The thought terrifies me.

The doctor motions for me to sit down, so I do. I settle into the seat, uncertainty gnawing at me. Before I can do anything, the man jabs the needles into my arm, making me jump. Luckily he hit my vein on the first try - I would've had to slug him across the face if he wriggled the needle around in my arm.

My eyes turn down to the tubes, watching my blood travel through them and to a bag. I wonder how much blood there is total in the human body? It must be a lot if I can give Jack this much and still be functioning properly.[/color] The bag fills up quickly, probably because I'm nervous. The doctor takes the bag away, but his face is distorted by a black splotch in my field of vision. What...?[/color] I blink, only to find more dark spots appearing, shifting, and then disappearing. I take a deep breath, but that's a mistake. The room feels like its shifting out from underneath me.

I lean heavily against the table that's right beside my chair, and eventually I rest my head down on it. My head's spinning and I feel as if I'm about to pass out - and then it hits me. I haven't eaten anything lately, and I'm underweight. Of course the thought never crossed my mind. I don't think first.[/color] I let out a low gurgling growl. I know the Uprising also taught us how to deal with blood loss... if only I could remember. Remember, dammit, remember.[/color] In a hazy daze, I clumsily slide off the seat, lay on my back on the ground, and prop my feet up on the chair. It doesn't provide instant relief, but eventually it will. The cool floor feels good against my back, anyway.

The darkness sucks me back under it's bubbly surface for a while until I can finally resurface and keep my eyes open for more than a moment. The face is still there in the dark room. From somewhere outside some light is shining in eluminating the person enough to make out the most likely uncomfortable position on the chair.
That face belongs to a friend, the friend. The one person I would trust with my life. My avoxed companion Devroux, who has been through just as much hardship as I have been. He became an avox, lost his ability to speak and his freedom, yet found a way out and had a girlfriend and son. Both are lost somewhere where he can't find them. Not even to mention all the limbs he's lost over the time. If anybody can understand what I'm going through physically as well as mentally it's him.

I'm not sure how or why but I do feel 20% more alive and in less pain than on that cold steel table. So I lift my head and study the white bandages around my midriff which have red stains on them as if the unblemished white was an insult to our filthy district.
In my right arm, which is still bandaged because of my fight with Noreens friend Scutcher, who ruined our last night together, I find a tube stuck. When I follow it with my eyes I see a bag overhead, which contains the remains of some red liquid.

Clearing my throat I try to get Devrouxs attention who is out cold on a chair nearby. What a guard he is. No wonder. His face looks as if a horse cart had run over it. His nose is swollen and red and blue circle are froming under his eyes. Vagely I remember him interfering in the justice building. He might have saved my life and as far as I can tell there aren't any shackles on either one of us.

"Devroux." I whisper as loud as my hoarse voice allows me.
I want him to leave as long as he still can because I'm sure peace keepers will come looking for us sooner or later. My friend doesn't need to go down with me. He still has a chance to go and find his wife and son. "Dev. You have to leave!"

With my feet propped up, I'm starting to feel better. Maybe the blood is all rushing back to my head, I don't know; but the black splotches are leaving my vision.

I close my eyes, letting myself lie limp against the cold floor. I'm starting to feel exhausted, and with good reason. I've nearly had a heart attack during the reaping - most likely not as bad as Jack, but still - fought off some lady, then gave Jack quite a bit of my blood. I have good reasons.

A whisper brings me to open my eyes. It's Jack, and he's finally awake. I turn my head so I can look at him, and he tells me that I should get out of here. But why? Peacekeepers. Would Jack leave me, though, if there was a threat of Peacekeepers and I was in the state he was in now? I don't care if I'm caught down here by a Peacekeeper - hell, I don't think if I could move even if I wanted to. I shake my head 'no.' I'm not going to leave him here with this stranger girl.

So Devroux remains by my side even though I try to get him to leave but there's no arguing with him. Maybe that's a god thing because the next two days are hell-physically as much as mentally.

My mind is battling the thought of loosing Noreen forever and keeps coming up with the craziest theories how I could get her back...maybe sneak onto the train, pose as peace keeper, make it into the dorms and somehow get her out....or stranger ideas. Anything so I don't have to face the fact that she and the babies are gone and will not return to me. Never.

My body is fighting his own battle due to blood loss, ruptured intestines and an onsetting infection.
The doctor however has gotten money from somebody and stocked up on medication and some wonderful drug called morphling for me. It's the best thing I know because it dulls pain to a bearable level but also makes you strangely euphoric, which right now is a wonderful state. I hope his supplies last a very long time and when he gives me the last injection and announces that that's it and I should leave as long as I can, I even think about digging up Noreens hidden stash of tesserae in the garden.

That evening I take Devrouxs hand after 2 days of not talking and staring at the wall and say. "Help me, old friend. It's time to go."
Home is not the place I want to go to because everthing there reminds me of Noreen but in my current state I have no other option.

With his help I make it a few steps where the doctor catches up to us and tells us to wait. Then he brings his horse carriage around to the front and asks us to get on. "I have to visit a patient anyway."

The ride shakes me up something aweful but I clench my jaw and suck it up without a word. What would Noreen say. She's facing the greatest torture of her life.
The man gives me what could be interpreted as a smile and clicks his tongue so his big, blacvk cold blood starts pulling the carriage down the street.

"I've known you since you were a little boy, Jack. I also know you can't stand me but I still want to tell you that I am sorry for what happened...that your girl got reaped."
"Wife." Is all I mutter and stare ahead at the dusty road.
"Hm." He answers and the falls silent until we're at my house.

Slowly I slide off the carriage and wait for Devroux, who is still at my side like a shadow I never wanted. Apparently he's over the danger of being discovered.
Just when I want to leave with hanging shoulders the doctor hands me a small bottle of pills.
"Present from me. Take two a day. It'll help you stay alive."
I nod and hope it's more morphling, which has become my best friend over the past 48 hours but I'm not sure.

My mother has noticed the arrival of the cart and is standing at the door with a smile- a genuine one.
But I turn to Devroux and start my last attempt. " You can still find what I can't. Go look for your family." Hopefully he'll listen this time because I'm done trying.

The next few days go by quickly. I regain my strength and help out here and there, but always checking up on Jack to make sure he's alright.

When the day comes for him to leave this wretched place, I'm happy for him. He takes my hand and I help him down the halls and onto a carriage that's drawn by a horse. I've never been in one of these, so I can't help but feel a twinge of nervousness. As the horse begins to move, the carriage begins to jerk and sway uncontrollably, it seems. How does this thing even stay upright? I'm unaware of my white-knuckled grip on a ledge nearby me. The motor things in the Capitol are much smoother than this.

I'm relieved when we reach the Lexington household. I hastily get out after Jack, more than thankful to be on stable ground. Good old solid, motionless ground. I'm too busy trying to get over the swaying feeling I'm still experiencing to notice the doctor give Jack some pills. I step forward and reach out with my only hand and place it on the back of his neck; I then lean forward to put my forehead against his. It's my way of saying goodbye to people I really care about. I won't be seeing him for a very long time - if I ever do get to see him again.

Letting go, I turn to his mother and give her a respectful bow, and turning back to Jack, I give a simple nod of my head with a plain message: take care.[/color] I smile at him, turn around, and then head off down the road.

feeling his hand sneak around my neck I know he'll say goodbye.
I Close my eyes and lean my forehead against his. Maybe the last time we'll ever be this close but I know I have to let him go. When he can find his family I don't have any right to keep my friend here plus I'm afraid for his safety around me. An avox has no place here.

"Goodbye, my friend. Make sure you find your way back here some day."
With that my hand slides off his shoulder and without wathcing him walk away I make it to our doorstep where my mother reaches under my arm to support me.

This goodbye is so bitter sweet. I know Devroux longs to see his son just as much as I do. For him it can still happen.
Unfortunately the avox is the best and only friend I have left in this dreary world. I wrenches my gutts to see him go and I want nothing more than crawl under the covers and hide from the world, in which I seem to have lost my place.

Goodbye, my only friend.
