Lethe Turner
The least she could hope for was that there were no mirrors in Topaz's room.
Giggling like little schoolchildren, the Victors shuffled through the hallways of the building they were staying in towards Topaz's room. Outside, night was still heavy on the Capitol, but even from the hall, whenever she passed a window, Lethe could hear the celebrations going on in the streets, car horns honking, cheers, singing. Of course they would be gallivanting around in their ridiculous costumes clad on ridiculous bodies: a Victor was to be married.
The booze in Lethe's small, pale hands felt too heavy, too unsteady, too uneasy and her stomach was churning as she tip-toed beside the others. But, as she glanced around from Arbor to Julian to Mace and finally to the newest Victor, Klaus, she knew it was highly unlikely she'd end up in a bathtub in the morning, tangled up with one of them. Unlikely she'd end up vomiting in the doctor's office again, unlikely he'd hand her that little slip of paper, the slip of paper the changed everything. Positive.
Camalia licked Lethe's neck and Lethe stroked her from her usual perch on her shoulder. Eden had be to left behind and now it was only the faithful lizard to her aid. Her friend when Lethe needed to talk. Because it was embarrassing speaking of Eric's disappearance to anyone, not even to her fellow Victors.
Lethe had been left behind yet again. And this time, he was alive. He was alive, he was Eden's father and he was gone, he left her behind and even the though it stabbed Lethe deeply in the stomach and she found her head dropping to her moving feet in that hallway, bottom lip tightly clamped down by her teeth, trying to suppress the pain rising in her throat, choking her. Not today, she reminded herself, forcing her tense neck to pull her head back up, we're here to be happy for Topaz. For Topaz who was childless. For Topaz who'd chosen to wait. For Topaz who was getting married while Lethe Turner was left in the dust, a child's hand in hers. Hers.
Before she knew it, Lethe found herself creeping into Topaz's darkened room, "shh"s being exchanged between the Victors, who hastily fell into a buzzing silence, grins on tight. Even Lethe, who surveyed the room (casting her eyes hastily away from any mirrors) found she couldn't resist a smile. Dress bags were hung up near the closet, hiding whatever was inside, but Lethe knew whatever it was, it was gorgeous. It had to be. The bride-to-be was beautiful, or so Lethe thought, and they surrounded her like shadows, watching her chest rise and fall slowly, studying her tangled form, braided around her sheets. For a split-second, Lethe wondered, her lips parting slightly in envy at Topaz, if sleep was as unfamiliar and foreign to the other Victors as it was for her.
Someone was mouthing down a countdown and someone had the light switch clutched in between the fingers and Lethe held the booze tightly, forcing all her burning jealousy at Topaz's engagement ring to liquefy into excitement for the wedding. Five. It churned painfully deep within and Lethe clutched the bottles even tighter. Four. These might actually come in handy. Three. Alright, now, she was kind of excited, it hummed within her. Two. It rose up in her throat, leaving a heaviness behind, the dregs of envy resting at the base of esophagus, but-One!
The lights suddenly blinded them all and through it, Lethe heard herself join the chorus of, "SURPRISE!" Even Camalia had found her way onto the bed, skittering down Lethe's arm and was joining in the fun, licking Topaz's face.
Even the lizard was excited for Topaz. The different only person, the only selfish beast, was Lethe Turner herself.
(ooc: can we not have a rigid posting order for this so it goes by more quickly, please? ^^
