Arletta is determined to believe that she can breath underwater. Even after a large number of attempts -with most ending with her almost drowning herself she still believes that one day -hopefully soon, that the water will fill her lungs and she will breath. When she isn't attempting to drown herself she will always stay close to any source of water, loving its silky feel and its general comfort that it brings her. A small pond lays not to far from where they live and Arletta is the only one who knows about it, stubbornly she has never told her water crazed twin, wanting the water to envelope her body and hers alone.

History:

five sisters, a home in the wilderness a symphony of colour and freedom. Water. Drowning. A life with no rules. no boundaries and nothing but the confines of my own imagination. What more could I want.

Lungful's of water cascade down my throat. I feel the coldness of the pond water seeps into my skin, and goosebumps lay themselves along the surface. Brown hair flows around my shoulders, as the breeze from the air bushes it forwards and backwards. The water brings each movement of my body to almost a standstill and I feel as though I'm walking on air. The type of place that many of spoken about. Where the air is so light that it lifts you off your feet and you feel weightless, like there is nothing to hold you back from floating away. As the water flows around me its liquid touch graces my skin, cold tingles race through my body, but I don't mind. Desperately I try to suck in another breath of air, water fills my mouth, slides down my throat and just as the blackness creeps across my vision I cough. I splutter and hack up the water, my head breaking the surface.

Sucking in great lungfuls of fresh air I flick the my brown mop of hair away from my eyes. The tiny dancing dots slowly begin to stumble away. Each breath sends small painful tremors through my body. But I only reach forward and smash my hand angrily against the surface of water, a loud clap skitters across the water, as though the ripples that follow it are just a lead on from the sound. A small splash catches me on the face and once more I try to breath the water in. Within seconds I'm spluttering and gasping for air -air, not water. My lungs seem to be pleading with me to breath harder and faster, to fill them quicker and to do it faster.

"Screw you lungs-" Water follows my words, seeping past my teeth and through my lips, my words cling to the water that falls from my lips. Another cough. Scrambling forwards I slowly drag my water logged body away from the pond. Thin, stick-like arms reluctantly drag me forwards, my thin legs propel me up and onto the mud, where I sit. I glare at the sparkle expanse before me, eyes as dark and forbidding as coal, meeting the jittering, glittering surface of a small puddle of water. "I need to breath underwater. Don't you get that?" With more force then last time I smash my fist harshly against the surface. The water grasps my hand and it sinks in, but I yank it away, my eye staring daggers. "You are not helping. I've been trying to do this for ten years now. Why don't you understand?"

It was nothing unusual. It was, in fact, a common occurrence. And as always my words seem to echo harmlessly against the surface of the water. For ten years I had yelled at the pond, for ten years I had dove into the murky depths. For ten years I had plunged below the surface and breathed -well at least I had attempted to.[/i][/color] It always ended the same. I would hold my breath, letting the water rush around me, wrap around me and hold me. Then as I felt faint, as my chest began to ache and my heart began to hammer, faster, faster, faster and faster I would let the water fill my mouth, rush into me and paralyze me. Using as much self-control as I could I would try and choke it down, try swallow it, and wait. I never had to wait more then a few seconds. The pain would become so shocking, so agonising that all self-control was forgotten and my feet would collide with the muddy bottom and I would leap upwards, like an arrow straight from a bow strong. For a moment the water would part for me, slip by, and the only way of knowing I had been there was the trail of bubbles that lingered on my passage.

Just as I felt the coldness go from uncomfortable to prickling, just as the black dots stopped dancing and became a full blown paint brush -whack, whack, whack. As though painting my eyes, spreading the sinking coldness and blackness through my body my head would break the surface. My lips would part under an unspoken command (my body would argue no, no, don't, stop). Then there was me, desperately trying to hold onto the hope that had tangled itself in my chest, that I could breath underwater. But the air would wisp through my hesitant lips, slipping down my throat and filling my lungs. I would breath. Air, but never water. Forcefully my body would curl backwards, pain still dancing along my body, jabs hitting me in my skull, prodding and poking me and forcing me to close my eyes and spit, chuck and force the water from my body. It was always the same. Anger would bubble below the surface and I would scream, my words echoing aimlessly across the surface. There was never an answer and I had long since past the stage where I would demand one. My screams shattering the peace as I angrily grilled the water to respond.

It was always calm, as though I was the storm, and the pond was the peace before I hit. When I left that water I took all of its rage with me. As the minutes passed my rage would turn to calm and the black dots and the pain would fade away to a dull throb. Normally I would do this up to five times a day, carelessly throwing myself against the water, stubbornly and arrogantly unwilling to believe the truth. One day it would work, one day the water would fill my lungs, but it wouldn't kill me, I would live. One cold, miserable day, my wish would come true. It was all I dreamed of.

Haltingly I get up. The sun had reached its final stage. the point at which it kisses the surface of the Earth, before slowly lowering itself into the cocoon of darkness. Brilliant colours flashed across the sky, stars trailed carefully behind the light, as though frightened it might burn them if they get too close. Numbly I stare at the beauty. By this time of the day I would normally head back to my family, stumbling on legs that ached, on a head that pounded from the constant torture that I put it through. My five sisters would be waiting on the food that I would bring them. The many assortments of plants that I would gather from the bushes and trees that grew near the pond -near my pond. This pond was like a lifeline, the same way a clown fish must stay to its home. As soon as it strays to far from its sea an-amity it, and the both the clown fish would die. If I were to stray too far from the pond I would perish, I would no longer survive.

Brown eyes flicker across the water, before dancing back along the edge of the small forest that my sisters and I called their home. A ghost of a grin flickers across my lips and with delicate deliberate steps my feet glide into the pond. As the water slowly slinks up every inch of my skin I gaze joyfully at the way the sun reflects off of the surface. A symphony of colours dances across the ripples as they lap gently at my skin. As the water reaches my chest I pause. A slight parting of my lips allows some air to fill my lungs and as they slip closed once more I shut my eyes. I spread my arms beside me, the faint ping, ping, ping of each drop falling fills my ears and I fall. The pond reaches forward, greedy hands wrapping itself around me like a cocoon, pulling me down, down and down, dragging me towards the deep dark depths. And I wait, preparing myself to breath.
