Sammie was hungry. No. That didn't even begin to explain what she felt. Feeling hungry would have been a luxury at this point. Sammie felt.... hollow. That didn't really explain it much better, either, but it was better than 'hungry'.
At least she had a house to go to at night. That's more than some of the people in the Seam had. She saw homeless people scattered around the streets, digging through the trash cans and alleys of her District. 'Prison' would be a better definition of District Twelve. Sammie thought.
Maybe a friend would help ease the hunger pangs a bit. Maybe someone who could understand Sammie's complex mind, someone who could put a smile on her face. That's what she needed. A friend. Friend. The word sounded alien to her.
