Annie Wheeler

^{Everyone seemed to have calmed down slighty. Annie looked up from the hole. She was still trapped and now in an even worse position than before. She needed to do something, quickly.

Annie watched the hunter, she seemed alright, a little grouchy but very intelligent. It was getting dark, at some point they would go to sleep and she could most likely sneak out.

She stayed quiet, pretending to still be afraid to talk, the first girl she had met, Lila was admitting to being bullied in her district. The guy, Nick who preferred to be called Romeo- Annie rolled her eyes at this- kissed Lila on the cheek. Annie couldn't stand this romance stuff.

As time went on, her thoughts turned to her district, her family. They would go hungry tonight as she sat in this stupid hole. But Annie would get out, even if these lot weren't coming with her. Annie certainly didn't fit in with this group, they hadn't even spoken to her.

At least the scared act was still paying off.}

Lila admits she's bullied. Then she says they call her ugly.
I raise my eyebrows. She's not ugly. I'm probably the most ugly person here, but she... she's beautiful.
Nick goes and kisses her on the cheek, which brings my eyebrows right back down.
More romance. Ugh.
He tells her she's not ugly.
I nod.
"I have to agree with Romeo on this one," I say, "I'm the ugliest person in this room. You're probably the most beautiful."
I know I said Romeo. I still don't like him, but he was nice, so I'll give him his nickname.
I look him up and down, and realize what I just said.
I hope he doesn't try to comfort me.
I'm not the one who needs comforting at the moment.
In fact, the one who needs it most is chalk white in a corner.

Whoa. This did not just become about me? I was finally kissed, but it was out of pity, and this girl was calling herself ugly now? What had I started? The girl was still in the corner. Alone. She wasn't talking. She just looked up.
"You-" I pointed at Jestina. "You are not ugly, okay? And you-" I pointed at Nick. "Need to stop fake flirting, it's annoying Jestina. And you." I turned to the girl in the corner. "We still need to know your name." There. Problem solved. The conversation was no longer about me. Disaster averted. I was content.

and yet, maybe she wasn't my girl...

oh well, i guess she just doesn't like attention, to bad

anyways, i turn to jestina, and i noticed the look she gave me when i kissed blondy, and i said "ok, i know her story, but, truly, why do you hate romance so much? Im just begining to thing that you are just bitter."

"I didn't call myself ugly, I'm just not as pretty as Lila," I say. "And dude, Romeo? Really? I don't hate romance, I just don't like it when people fake it. And finally, bitter is a big word considering I just saved your life after you tried to kill me."
I give an obviously fake smile, then roll my eyes.
So what if he thinks I'm bitter. We've already established that he doesn't like me and I don't like him. So now I don't care what he thinks of me.
The silence is still outside.
I'm stuck in here longer.
Besides, they're all from higher districts then me, so they're living the easy life.
"Oh, and your just lucky that every penny you get isn't your life-saver," I add. "I'm hunting as much as I can, and that's almost not enough, so quit bugging me!"
There. I finally spilled out all the problems of money, of life, of me.
I pull my knees up to my chest, put my face in them, and wrap my arms around my head. I don't care how they react.
I don't cry. I never cry.
But I don't talk, either.
I just sit there, listening to the shocked silence that follows my short out burst.

I felt bad for her. I genuinely did. But at least she could tell her family everything. At least she didn't have to lie to her mother about every little scrape she got, every time she got home from school too late. About why she wasn't going to the school dance, or why she wasn't trying out for the talent show. Her family loved her, knew everything about her. Why did I get? I got a mother who works too much, and a father that left when his wife got too old. All I had was my brother. And he was working all day, all night. But I wasn't going to make this about me again. I wasn't going to make it about her either, though. Well, maybe for a little while. She comforted me.
"I'm really sorry, I don't know what it's like to not know if you're going to have enough food to last the week. But I know how it's like to be the laughing stock of everyone in the city." I looked at Nick (I refuse to call him Romeo). "What's your problem? We all have something wrong with us. What's your story?"

"OK, if you guys want to know my story, then here goes."

I cough a little, and think that these people, three complete strangers, are gonna be the first people i tell this to.

"it started about six months ago, on my 16th birthday. I hate my birthdays, considering that it is the day of the reaping. I was in the hospital because i fooled around with the local tough guy's girlfriend. I was forced to watch the reaping, and my heart stopped. my brother was the boy tribute. I tried to get out of my bed, all the while yelling at my brother to not go up to the stage. But some doctors ran in and injected me with a sedative. By the time i woke up, the games were just about to start. I only had a glimpse of my brother before i saw him brutally murdered by a career. After that, i just snapped. When i got out of the hospital, i went to the liquor shop, robbed it, and i've been running ever since. That was why i was so freaked about the dogs..." i stared pointedly at Jestina "...chasing me through the forest when i met you guys. But now that i know that my presence here is uneeded, i think ill take my leave."

After my little speech, i walked over to the door, pushed it open, and ran away.

^{Annie saw her chance, Nick had just left and the door was wide open. She turned to the others.

"I take it you two want to get out of here alive?" Annie said, no longer bothering to be afraid.

"If you do, I know a safe and hidden way out of here." Annie began to clamber out of the hole, straightening up and stretching her muscles. "I'm Annie by the way."

Annie held her hand down to the hunter and Lila, offering them help up. Tonight was going to be eventful.}

I was torn. I could follow Nick, who was going off on his own and bound to die, or I could go with Annie, who seemed content on leaving Nick for dead. This was a big decision.
I thought about how good Nick had been to me, and how distant Annie had been.
I thought about how Jestina had scared us to the point where we had thought we were going to die.
And I thought about Nick's fake-but-possibly-real kiss. I couldn't waste any more time being fickle.
"Bye guys," I said, and I scrambled through to door and after Nick. I didn't care if I died. This was the most interesting my life had gotten since birth, and it could only get better.

I knew that running out into the open with a hovercraft over my head was the stupidest thing I have ever done. But then I heard footsteps behind me, and I try to turn around to see who it is, but now I cant move...

...the hovercraft has its ray thing on me...

...now is the first time I wonder what it would be like to die...

But suddenly I feel a hand pulling me down.

I can move again!

It is only a matter of time...

^{Lila ran out the door. Annie rolled her eyes and ran after her. The hovercraft was almost silent in the distance as a mockingjay sung a long warning note and the wildlife disappeard.

She saw the boy, stuck in the hovercrafts ray. She had to do something.

If I can get to the tunnels and pull him under... Annie made a quick descision.

She ran to the other side of the lake and found the entrance to the tunnel buried under bushes and leaves. She ran down it, luckily the reckeless boy was standing right above one of the trapdoors. She opened the trap door and reached up to him.

Trying to pull him inside.}

Stupid.
That's what he really his. Not Romeo. Not Nick. Just stupid.
He runs out the door just as I glance up.
I know they'll find him. I know they'll take him away. And lastly, I know he'll be killed.
But the thing that surprises me is that...
I care.
The girl that was sitting alone in the corner suddenly stands up and talks. But I'm not listening. I'm standing up.
I'm walking towards the doors slowly.
Nick is suddenly frozen by the current.
The girl jumps forward and grabs onto him, trying to pull him back.
But I know that in just seconds, the current will freeze her, too.
And then they'll be gone.
A scream escapes my lips.
“NO!”
I leap forward and grab onto her, having learned that the current can only go through two people. I try to pull, try to yank them free.
My heart is pounding in my chest.
And they come free.
As the force disappears, I rocket backwards and hit the wall. Hard.
I feel my head bang against it, and I feel like it just hit concrete.
I fall to the ground, and the world starts spinning.
I won't die. I know that for sure. But I'm hurt. Bad.
The edges of my vision are going black, and I can't compute what's going on.
But my brain forms words, and my mouth repeats them.
“Two times, Romeo,” I say so quietly, yet in the same way I talked to him before. “Two times, and still no thanks.”
And then my world goes black.
