"Your sister is weird."

I wish that I could bury them, like I do seeds in the ground. The memories of what people said, what they didn't say. With dirt-covered fingers, I pat down the soil, hiding away the little seed underneath my palms that will eventually bloom into something beautiful. Like Lethe, I think with a sad smile. It was constant, never-ending. All the way through school, they whispered and questioned and taunted me. "Why doesn't your sister know anyone?" "Does she remember you?" "Is she even your real sister?" And I would simply smile and say that yes, she does know me. She is my real sister, and no, nothing is wrong with her. I wasn't lying, I think to myself as I frown, crinkles appearing just above my nose, and push a strand of blonde hair behind my small ears. I wasn't. When authors write stories, they don't lie - they pretend. I don't lie, I just protect my sister. Even if the truth is that she doesn't need protecting, really. Not from any physical threats, anyway. When I finally brought myself to watch her trudge through blood and still come home, I knew that she'd be fine on her own. But I didn't shield her from the swords and knives, I hid her away from the words, the queries and questions about her 'condition' that kept me up at night. Later on I would watch as my sister threw a knife into the Career Boy's stomach, signalling her victory. They would never question my sister's sanity, nor her life, again. Because my sister had won. My sister had lived. I had told them no, and realised that as Lethe was lifted to victory, I had won my own battle, too.
