I don’t like eating.

‘Go to bed – you need your strength.’

I’ll never be strong enough.

‘Go play with the other kids – they love running around, why don’t you?’

I wasn’t born to run.

‘Make friends – they’ll help you when you’re older.’

Nobody likes me.

Barked commands filled my mind as Mama struggled to let me live for myself, pestering me to grasp the opportunities she’d never had.

Eat, sleep, play, make friends.

Even then I was too stubborn to listen.

It wasn’t what I wanted.

Yet I would give anything to have those childhood days back.

And have it all.

I’m a mess when I’m broken.

My chestnut hair hangs limply, the glossy shine rapidly fading as I turn to suffocating sadness.

My smile becomes non-existent, and there is nothing to brighten my day.

My voice breaks, the sounds escaping my lips distorted and ugly whilst I wait to die, for nothing could hurt more than this relentless heartache.

My eyes – so brown – can become so blue when I’m struggling to fight the tears.

All because of him.

And how he left me.

Only last month.

She preached of the created beauty that lay so far out of our reach, but never far from our souls.
