There are times when I am thoroughly convinced I am unfit for any human relationship. Really.

"Babies are supposed to bury their parents. Parents aren't supposed to bury their babies," my mom sobbed into my dad's shoulder when I was eight and in the midst of my 16th surgery.

I don't see much of my father, because my hospital bills are worth a small country's fortune and he's out in the lumber yard from morning to midnight every night. He's a mystery, a riddle to a question I'm afraid to ask. I hardly know anything about him, and he in turn doesn't know a thing about me. Sometimes I wonder if he ever wonders if I'm worth it. I don't think I am. I can't imagine how another human being ever could.

I try to avoid my mother altogether. Funny as it is, sometimes I forget that the oxygen tank I'm wheeling around is an hourglass for all to see how much limited time I've got left. I think I'm the only person in the world who knows how ordinary I am. My mother
