Appearances are everything when you're second in command of a drug cartel.

In the streets I dress to blend in with the innocents, the ones who won't recognize me as a girl who can end lives with one spoken order. I pose as the average stranger in their midst, donning hoodies and jeans and sneakers like they're camouflage. Unless you're in a laboratory full of geeks in white lab coats it isn't difficult to look the part. Back where I come from we wear our own versions of lab coats, or at least the producers do. I don't mingle in the science business. All of their chemicals and methods are none of my concern, just as long as they're producing the quality merchandise our customers pay for. When I was still climbing the ranks I would often visit their makeshift laboratories just to get my own taste of their perspective. Now that I've nearly reached the top there's no need to even think of them as anything but worker ants.

Every colony has a queen, right? You could say I'm the queen of this cartel since I'm the highest ranking female, but there is one above me. Osgarus, or "Os the Owl." Not a very intimidating street name, but it suits his person. He's a very wise drug lord, otherwise how would we have survived this long? And that's not the only bit. People often forget the true nature of owls. They're birds of prey that hunt in the darkness, swooping down with their wide wings to snatch little animals with their talons. It's done in complete silence, always catching the poor things by surprise. When people forget that they often end up dead. If you want my advice, don't pester a man like Os. He may not be the savage gangster people imagine him to be, but this is a family business, it's coded in his blood to be the boss. Cross him, and you will die.

"Where is Os?"

They enter the room as a trio, clad in leather jackets and T-shirts with no weapons on hand. Nobody walks into this house with weapons. I don't spare them a glance until I close the safe and lock it shut. I'm the only one available presently, so whatever burden they carry will become my own very soon. "Busy," I mutter, and by busy I mean too stressed to handle whatever shit they're about to add to my pile. Os doesn't fare well when overwhelmed, but luckily I'm always here to handle whatever matters need not concern him at the moment. "Talk to me instead. What's the problem?" There's no need to beat around the bush - I know they're about to bring me bad news. Fortunately I'm very capable of dealing with problems. I'm well disciplined in my trade.

They hesitate, and I want to slap the skin off of their faces. Is a woman in charge too unconventional for them? I know how I look; in here I don't dress like I do in the streets. I wear the nicest skirts and dresses my drug money can buy, and there's always jewelry glittering somewhere on my person. I don't look the least bit intimidating, but I have a reputation of my own. Arrow, they call me, because I always hit my mark. ~~Arrows can also miss, but I've never missed before.~~ It's a street name I earned on my own time, and if I have to listen to two more seconds of silence I'm going to show these punks why not to waste my time.

"It's the new recruit," one of them says. I happen to know who he's talking about. It's a cousin of one of our current distributors, hired due to a small demand of new blood. I never trust new recruits until they prove their loyalty, and obviously this one is about to disappoint me. "He's been stealing from us."

"Only a little!" One of them tries too quickly to defend the thief. It will only be a small dent in our profit, but we're an illegal business, we have rules. Break our rules and we'll have to break something of yours.

In this case, it'll have to be his skull.

"Send a grunt after him. Take anything and everything. Money, drugs, anything profitable." Unlike these idiots I don't hesitate. I know exactly what the business wants and needs. A thief is not one. We can't afford to be merciless, and if I want to keep my title I can't be soft. Arrow always hits her mark. This thief is my new target, and even though I never have to get my hands dirty it's my name they'll hear after the thief dies. Arrow's orders, they'll say. Besides, a thief like this isn't even worthy of being mentioned again. That's why I'm sending a grunt instead of a hitman. "I want all of it brought to me." I continue, because I'm greedy and there's no point in hiding it. I'm second in command of a damn drug cartel. What else do we want but money and power?

"Right, I'll go get Douglas," They're about to leave when my voice halts them in their tracks. "Not Douglas."

They turn in unison. I like to think of them as ants when they do things like that. "Send Rodriguez," I order, not just because of efficiency but because I can. I like to fuck up any plan these ants suggest. How well they heed my demands will prove to me how loyal they are. Plus, it's fun to assert my authority. I'm good at what I do, just as good as Osgarus is. That's why I'm his right hand woman - and no, it's not because we sleep together from time to time. That's just stress relief. Friends with benefits you might say, but we like to think of us as very cooperative business partners.

"The girl?"

I would sigh, but I don't express weak emotions. This is the shit I'm talking about.

I cross my arms and arch a brow. "Yes, the woman. She's the best grunt we have. If you have a problem with that, you can take it up with her." I'd like to see that. Isabella would probably tear their genitals off and hang them where the rest of our grunts could see. I'm not the type of girl who knows or cares about every grunt, but I know Isabella. She's our only female grunt, and she happens to be the best damn one.

I'm officially done with this case. It shouldn't take more than a minute to order a hit, as cold-hearted as that sounds. Drugs are a sketchy business. Everyone knows the rules and the risks, and anyone who breaks them is just an idiot waiting for his death. I'll let Isabella take care of this one on her own. You can't trust men to do anything right.

They leave in silence, and I smile with painted lips.
