Siren spoke and she told her that she didn’t deserve it; she told her that she wasn’t allowed to hear it. And in her chest her heart shattered, her dreams collided and exploded and she felt the pain of having someone stomp on her heart in heels. This girl hated Aelia, and she didn’t know why, this girl sneered and glared at her, a condescending look glittering in her eyes. She told her she wasn’t going to hear about the ocean, but Aelia wanted to hear about it, she wanted to know. But ti felt like she was trying to catch sand, it slipped through her fingers every time she tried to reform her dream. It fell to the ground and she couldn’t tell the difference between normal sand and those of her dream. And before long she was frantically clawing at the last parts hoping that she could catch it once more. Then she attacked Aelia Vanderwell. She took the blow, a stunned rabbit having been caught in a light. She stood there, hands shaking, body shaking, mind reeling.

Her dream was floating away in the wind.

Why?

What had she ever done to get that answer? Why did this girl hate her so much? Why was this girl so determined to crush everything about her and then she was moving, the knife in her hand and it was shaking. But she was angry, so angry.

The blade missed, it slipped past Siren Baitwell as though it had a mind of its own and she missed. That annoyed her and she was ready to do it again, she was ready to hit her all over again and make her bleed and make her tell Aelia about the ocean, because she deserved it. She deserved to know it, she didn’t deserve pain and suffering, she didn’t deserve to have her dreams crushed in her chest. She hadn’t done anything wrong, except for live, except fighting for survival, but there was nothing wrong with that.

She couldn’t care, though didn’t care, that anger was shattered. An axe was plunged through its core when she heard his voice. Leon’s words cut in and he was there and he was talking and he was telling her all about the ocean, he was telling her the colours and the way it sounded and how powerful it was. It was everything she had thought, it was what she wanted to hear and his words filled her heart and her soul and they beat down that anger and rage until it was gone. He’d told her, he thought she deserved to hear and that was the kindest thing anyone had ever done for her. He was standing right in front of her and he was telling her everything she had ever wanted to hear and Aelia couldn’t breathe.

The knife slipped from her hands and she cried. The tears ran down her face, and the pain that she was in wasn’t anywhere near as bad as the joy in her heart. Everything hurt, her body hurt, but her heart felt as light as air. She sobbed and there was snot and it was ugly and she slipped forwards, crashing into Leon. Her small, thin, fragile arms wrapped around him, she clung to him, crying, she clung to him, thinking of the image he had created, thinking of the world she had always wanted to see.

She wanted to say thank you, she wanted to tell him how much she liked it. How much she wanted to run and run and run and see it. She wanted to tell him she was sorry for watching him disappear in the bloodbath and that she wished she could have followed him. She didn’t want to be sorry for attacking his allies and she wasn’t.

She could feel it. The sand in her hands, this time, it clung to her skin and it didn’t slip away. It was there, as she grabbed for it, it came, it was there and her dream was stuck to her. Maybe it was her tears that kept them from slipping away this time, she didn’t care. She just held onto the boy in front of her, sobbing, bleeding, living, because he had told her about the ocean.
