DISCUS THROW

Welcome to the Discus event of the second Panem Olympic Games! The track and field complex is located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the backstop, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character setting up for their throw, and then paste the code [*roll=825+4100] without the asterisks into your post THREE TIMES and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a distance, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 4509 is read as 45.09 meters) Each participant will be measured by their best throw only, not their average distance or the sum of their throws.

The competitor with the furthest distance wins this event. Distances for this event will be continually updated on this thread. After you have rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction to each throw if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post your throws whenever you please. Keep in mind that this event must be wrapped up by the end of the Olympics Day.

These Olympic events don't mean much to me except an opportunity to treat this one huge event as a party. Its not often districts gather in one area other than to kill each other. As much fun as that sounds, I don't feel like killing anyone. I don't want to lose myself to the grim reaper's clutches like my friend Leon. I miss the old Leon and I'm afraid he will forget our friendship. Enough of that though. The discus throw is the event I'm in. I don't have any experience with this, but there's always a first time for everything. I stretch my arms a bit before picking up the item I'll be throwing. I eye it a bit expecting something more deadly. Damn games have me looking for death everywhere.

Being away from home was something foreign to him. Without father's constant reminders of affection it left him feeling something more than empty. Nonetheless, he found this new environment invigorating. Somewhere where the bruises he bore upon his flesh were foreign and unnecessary. They did not train for a fight to the death, they trained for glory and pride. Something Jaguar thought of little importance until today. He was excited to see the others fight, wanted to see the sweat upon their brow as they worked hard for something that wouldn't most likely end in their demise.

Jaguar didn't hate the games, far from it, but this environment made him happier than even his father's palms against his skin.

And so when he faced the crowd, wrapped within a spandex cocoon he raised his arms high above his head and cheered. Career against Career, showing the powers they'd honed in years of training. He recalled hours of throwing sharp knives at a emotionless dummy, one void of emotion or feeling. Recently he'd been allowed to hurl heavy, silver blades at them instead. Jaguar was much more fond of the throwing axes than the small knives he'd been throwing most of his life. It was more like the brute force he'd grown up on. Like the drug he'd been missing since leaving for this tournament.

A heavy disc clutched between sweating fingers, Jag positioned himself.

I was still sweating off losing the 100m sprint by the time the Discus throw came around. It was an event I volunteered for on a whim. I only had limited experience with throwing specific track equipment, but I had strength and accuracy going for me from the many hours spent both in the streets and in the training center. You had to be athletic if you wanted to survive out there. Living alone gave me plenty of opportunity to exercise, and as a result I felt relatively confident about today's event.

That didn't mean I had to like my competitors or anything. We were all losers together, it seemed. I may be a little more relaxed than most careers, but that was because I placed my values in something bigger than reverence. I wanted success, but I wanted it on my own terms. That isn't to say I wouldn't be angry and lethal in the games, it just meant that the Olympics didn't mean as much to me as they probably did to others. I didn't need a medal to prove myself to anyone. I had done enough of that through the constant battles I waged in the alleyways of my home. Real violence always overweighed the orchestrated stuff you saw on television. I preferred it that way.

At least I could continue to work on my strength here. I had that much going for me.

Discus was a good thing. It involved many muscles in the body. Neil was a master of most things. He was great at most things. Neil was here to prove a point. He was there to prove that he wasn't just a good looking face. He had skill that he could show. He could do great. His career training led to this. Maybe he'd find someone after and have a good time with them. His mind began running through some very naughty images. He shook his head and watched a few of the others go. Then it was his turn. He began breathing normally, preparing himself to throw. He was good, but maybe not as good as others. He was going to destroy everyone. He was smarter than them all and he was gonna be a show off. His discus better go far, or else, he might die of embarrassment. He smiled to the crowd and then threw all 3 one after another. He watched them soar, he was getting a bit nervous in front of everyone. He smiled to himself and huffed in his spot.

The Millisons needed more pride, her mother had decided.

Her status as married victor apparently wasn’t enough; she had lectured Diamond and her sister for over an hour about how the Olympics were the perfect opportunity to revive their legacy and rekindle the fire that was their famous surname. Honestly, Diamond didn’t mind travelling to another District just to compete in a few sports. There were rumors of parties and other ecstasy-ridden events during the Olympics, not to mention there would be careers from other districts to mingle with if the urge arose. So she would have to compete in a few events and impress her parents, fine. She could do that. The rest of her time, however, would be spent among her fellow athletes. As long as somebody can supply the free alcohol.

She could feel the blood warming her muscles after stretches. As 6th in line for the discus throw, she was trapped in the middle and forced to compare herself to the previous athletes whilst praying that the next ones couldn’t outmatch her. She knew her mother would be sitting on the couch and scrutinizing with Pearl beside her, except Pearl didn’t actually care about family pride and all of that bothersome garbage. Not that family pride was necessarily a bad thing – it was just annoying having to bear that burden. The Millisons were old news. How long would her fame actually last if she were to win a medal?

She tried not to make her sigh too obvious as she picked up her disc and prepared her throw. Even if she lost, the only thing she would have to worry about was a scolding.

She could handle that.

If i'm going to be completely honest he writes, I don't really care for athletics at all. I'm just here for that medal to hang around my neck at the dinner table for a month straight so I can rub it in all my siblings' faces every single meal. God, I can't wait to see Kellan's sour face when he gets a load of this. Or Justice - I've been meaning to find a new way to annoy him other than hiding his hair product all around the house. Scratching at his head with his pencil, the eldest Fray pauses for a moment of reflection. As a sly grin spurts upon his face once more his mind clicks on again and continues his frivolous scribbling right before his event begins.

And the best part is that it works two ways. If I make an absolute idiot of myself I can shrug it off and act like I don't care. Of course I'll be pissed, but they'll try and bug me about it, the whole lot of them. God, Mom and Dad should have stopped at me, everyone knows the others are only there because my parents wanted a trophy case of spare children to polish up every now and then. Anyway, it'll work both ways because I'll let no indication of my disappointment show. So while they're all whining and throwing tantrums over their failures or gloating with their prizes, I'll simply act like I don't give a shit. Which I won't, if I don't win.

(But let's be honest, I've got great odds.)

If you would've known growing up that I would be standing here competing in the Panem Olympics, I would've told you that you were crazy. Never once my entire life did this seem possible. All the hours spent in the training center was for the games, but I guess it all paid off in the end. It's amazing to stand here in front of everyone knowing that making it this far is the perfect challenge, and the biggest honor in the world. Fighting in the hunger games wouldn't bring this much honor because it could end in my death, but this one will definitely show my family what I'm capable of. I left Hylla at home with my aunt and uncle because she didn't come. She's not competing in the events, so she's stuck with my cousins. I hope they are treating her well.

One of the events I'm lucky enough to compete in is the discus throw. It's a giant disk that flies through the air flying as far as I possibly make it. Somewhere my parents are out there unless they are dead. They randomly disappeared without saying goodbye leaving me with Hylla. We lived on the streets for a year because nobody would take us in. Nobdoy wanted to deal with two hooligans, but my aunt and uncle were different. It feels geat to be out of there house and in a different district for once. I can only hope that they are watching and that I'll make them proud because I want to represent my family.

I watch the first person throw the disc, and fear pulses inside me. I want to make my family proud. I want to make myself proud because it's important. Maybe winning will bring my parents back home, but right now that isn't the thing that should be resting upon my mind. I take a deep breath clearing every thought except the one of throwing and showing the nation what I am capable of. I stand in the square, and when it's the right time I launch the disc hoping that everything goes according to plan.

Discus. Okay. You can do this Barty - You're pretty damn good at throwing spears and axes at your twin brother from day-to-day, so why wouldn't you be able to throw a disk? Easy. Heck, I may not be the strongest or have the biggest arms, but I am pretty quick and my technique is one of the best in District Two. My competitors tower over me - Big build Careers, I call 'em. They don't intimidate me, not one bit. I'm Barty Birch and I'll outclass them all. Hmn.

Again I'm dressed in black shorts, spikes and a purple vest with the number two printed in black on the front. Swallow-Birch is also printed on the back in the same color. I feel like a celebrity. Like one of the sports stars from before the war. I grin, picking up my disk. Pretty heavy, but that means little. Power equals speed multiplied by weight. Wind resistance little, torque calculated - Angle forty-five degrees exactly. That will produce the optimum distance for my body. Just need to variate my speed without screwing up. I whirl around and release the disk, hoping for the best.

Shoulders set straight and chin held high, the girl may be holding several pounds of metal within her hand, but no amount of steel could weigh her down right now. She is the electric pride of ten thousand suns. She is heart-flutter to the point of having a joy-induced meltdown. She is an Olympian and this moment belongs to her. All of these people are here to watch and acknowledge the brute strength of Halcyon Antoinette and her Victorious sister is nowhere to be seen.

This is perfection.

Perhaps she should fear failure, but there is confidence burning her up within her bones and so thoughts of self-doubt can't find a foothold. She has come too far, worked too long, and knows with absolute certainty what she is capable of. Maybe she cannot bend her bones into a graceful whirlwind of contortionist art, but this weight she holds is hers to hurl at the world and today: It will echo.

Unsurprisingly, at thirteen, Shiv was among the youngest competitors at the second Olympics. Old enough to qualify still, but young enough to look out of place. She could not put into words how much she resented it. Especially since it wasn't even as big of a disadvantage as they made it out to be in most cases — just because she was a little smaller and had been training for a little shorter didn't mean she wasn't good.

Plus, thirteen or not, Shiv was all lank, lithe and lean with enough reach to at least contend in events like the discus throw, where strength and muscle was an afterthought. As she waited for her turn to throw, the little spitfire from One glared shivs and shanks and daggers at the discs that the others hurled, willing a strong headwind to push the things back to earth.

When it was her turn, she strolled into the circle, exuding enough regal confidence to suggest that she already wore the gold medal around her neck. She wound up, counted backwards from three, and whipped around, letting the disc sail from her hand and through the air.
