RUNNING: 4X100M RELAY

Welcome to the 4x100 relay tournament of the second Panem Olympic Games! The track and field complex is located within the Olympic Arena, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the starting block, and remember, make your district proud!

The execution of this event is simple. Feel free to roleplay your character on the starting blocks and running, and then paste the code [*roll=349+1050] without the asterisks into your post and roll, as you would with a Hunger Games die. This will result in a four-digit number that will correspond to a time, which is read with a decimal point separating the first two and the last two digits (e.g. 1264 is read as 12.64 seconds) The times of each competitor on each team will be added up to get the team's total.

The team with the lowest time wins this event. Times for this event will be continually updated on this thread.

After everyone has rolled, feel free to edit your post with your character's reaction if you so desire, but please keep it to one post rather than multiple.

There is NO POSTING ORDER; you may post your shots whenever you please. Keep in mind that this event must be wrapped up by the end of the Olympics Day.

It had been exciting in the last Olympics, where I'd won a gold medal in my event. So it was only natural I'd try it again, only in running this time. I'd always been quick on my feet and I could run pretty fast. But not long-distance. Only sprints. So one hundred metres was my perfect sprinting distance. I just hope I can pull this off...this was either going to go really well or really bad, and I sure as hell hoped it would go well.

It was a relay, so I was working in a team. That was okay, I guess. I'd never been good at teamwork but I had to go ahead and go along with it. Sometimes in life you had to do that kind of stuff, things you weren't comfortable with. I'd spent most of my life in my comfort zone and now was the time to get the hell out of it.

When it was my turn, I set off, sprinting. And I just prayed that I wouldn't be the slowest. I didn't mind not being the fastest, but I definitely did not want to be the slowest. And with that thought in mind, I ran.

Terry was the third leg of the District Two team to sprint in the 4x100m relay. This meant he was starting and ending on the curve instead of the straight. All the better, the curve was always his strong suit. Boredom pressed into whenever he couldn't vary his pace, and the constant force of rotation that a track's curve gave him seemed to spur him on even more.

It wasn't long before Terry's Pine-cousin, Tobias, came sprinting across the straight and tagged him off. Terry felt airless as he flew around the curve, hoping his time would adequately bring his team to the lead.

The nerves don’t hit me until I’m on the track, standing still in front of a huge crowd of what seems to be mostly District Four citizens. Reporters are televising the entire event, and I do my best to look away from them so they can’t catch my uneasy expression. My parents urged me to participate the moment word was out about the returning Olympics. I knew it would only be a distraction to my intense training, an unplanned snap in my current schedule. However, when I saw Rolex Ghram’s name on the roster – let’s just say that is a distraction I can handle…or want to handle, at least.

Oh god, the running has already started; my heart quickens as I escape from my daydreaming. I’m not usually that disconnected from reality. What is up with me? Suddenly, I’m tagged by the runner behind me and immediately set off, my relatively short legs fighting to pull me across the track and all I can think about as I grit my teeth and sprint is, why did I sign up for this why did I sign up for this why did I sign up for this? because anyone here can see that I was never built to be a runner, no matter how much practice I’ve put in. I'm bound to humiliate myself, not to mention the rest of my team.

The decathalon sprint was a tragedy.

I don't know what it was that made my feet give out and twist pain into my brain, but it's more of the fact that I came second to last rather than the condition of my health that's killing me. I wouldn't mind if a version of myself came and shot an arrow straight through my stomach right now. Perhaps it would finally let the butterflies leave. I'd spill red onto the track and feel myself slowly give out and yet I think it'd still feel easier than losing again. It's not just me counting on me today - it's a whole goddamn team.

We're a team. And I'm running first (at least it's not last at least it's not last at least it's not last). There's three other sour-looking kids lining up next to me and I can't help but think that whoever decided to put me here alongside of them is either a) an idiot or b) didn't catch the decathalon coverage yesterday. I'm hoping it wasn't the latter.

I signed up for this shit as a fucking joke. I mean... really? District 1 couldn't find literally anyone to run in this god damn race. When they told me I was actually going to be running in the relay I almost died of laughter until they realized they were fucking serious. The fat, poor girl from District 1 is going to be an olympian. The nothing from the streets would be making a fool of herself in front of the entire country. But I agreed, because for a few glorious day I would be free. I would be further away from home then legally possible, only being reaped could take her further away from home.

I look out onto the sandy shores of a district of seafarers, and enjoy the waves pushing salt and air into the atmosphere. The salty air tastes so unique and enjoyable, it fascinates me. How could people possibly adjust to this strange form of oxygen?

But I have to return my focus to the games, to the one thing my district trusted me to do, run. It amazes me that a girl with a figure like mine is in the olympics. The girls with muscles that form grapefruit muscles, or girls whose petite and twig figures allow them to bend like rubber, those are the girls who end up representing District 1. Not the girls whose skin hangs like snow covered trees, not girls who struggle to get out of bed in the morning, no those girls are left behind. Except me, I'm the only out of shape girl here. It's insulting, so fucking embarrassing. All I want to do is escape this failure.

So when the bayonet reaches my blimp fingers, I sprint. I grasp the stick and run... I run like nothing else has ever mattered. I run like the girl I wish I was.

Though Phenom and I had been nothing less than competitors when it came to epee, the two of us had spent our downtime back in the rec center in which I had previously run into my cousin, Leo. There had been a multitude of slaps on the back, spilled drinks, and laughter that would most likely be the highlight of this whole experience for me. In fact, I would be content to waste my time here, but the two of us jump at the call for relay and stumble out the door, running blindly toward the track as we jump in line just in time for warm ups and the oh-so-classic pep talks that would do absolutely nothing to boost morale.

“Tobias, you’re following Alita in position two.”

Perfect. I don’t have to start nor finish the event, two things I would surely find a way to screw up, so I nod in response before shooting a smile in the leader’s way. A pretty girl, for sure, but one that also looks as though she’s strong enough to snap my neck if I was to look at her the wrong way.

Twiddling my thumbs is not an option when I make my way to the block, for soon after the shot has sounded and I can see Alita thundering toward me at an alarming rate, and soon my hand is outstretched as I grasp the baton from her hand and shot off forward, looking for one target and one target only, Terry Birch.

How on earth would I be able to run much less compete with people who more than likely have both of their real legs? I'm surprised I'm in this running event. I'll hinder my team more than actually aiding them. I know once I run my part that everyone will blame me for when we lose. I'm nervous about competing due to my prosthetic leg. I've never tested it in this capacity before. No more time to dwell on it though. Its my turn to run. My heart starts beating ten times faster. I sprint ahead intending to defeat the odds.

Fuck. This was so boring.

I watched as people stretched. preparing themselves for the sprint which lay ahead. I don't stretch because that meant effort and effort mean no. After all what would be gain by stretching a few muscles? Yes it was less likely that I would injury myself, but why would I injure myself in the first place? I wasn't going to push myself, I wasn't going to go all out because hat was pointless and there was nothing to get from it. I couldn't care less about coming first or last- the only reason I was here was because she said she forbade it.

No one told me I couldnt do something. No one.

She didn't understand yet, she didn't get it. She thought if she told me not to do it that I would just listen to her, but I don't listen to shit. She cant run my life, I make my own decisions and she wasn't going to dictate my answers.

Suddenly some shit head is running at me, his arm out stretched the baton ready to grab. I dont start running, I just wait for him to basically come to a stop before I take the baton, my feet starting to carry me towards the next person, faster and faster.

Who cared about District loyalties when they were all pitted against each other? He should have been representing District One, based on his win in the 100m sprint. Figures he'd now be stuck with the slow pokes. He eyed his teammates, all of them at least a head taller than himself. While they were busy at the start line, he dropped back, winding through the other competitors until he standing alongside the District One sprinters. Now these four look like they could race. They looked like they could win.

Not that there was any point in winning. That the stupidest part of this whole competition. They were supposed to content themselves with things like "glory" and "honor". Well, not Berber. He was going to content himself with hawking whatever medals came his way.

And given the competition, his prospects were tanking by the minute.

"FABERGE HOPS!" The loudspeaker boomed, sounding a little too close to the way Leet yelled at him on the streets. He scowled, sulking back to his position. "This sucks," he muttered, and waited for his turn.

In all honesty, Nereus had no idea how the hell he was admitted into the Olympics, considering his love-hate relationship with some recreational elements. As he lined the tips of his Capitol appointed shoes against the edge of the red line, he eyed the other district fours next to him in the same manner he'd check out an ape; an underlying attempt at avoiding all three of them like the plague crawling under his skin. So far he loathed the Olympics - shot put, weightlifting, relay, the whole nine yards - and he was tired already despite not taking apart of any of his three events yet.

If he was anything by law, an Olympian was not it.

The most strenuous activity to occur for him all morning was waking up, and he'd given up on that if not for Uriel dragging him by the hems of his pants (him and Uriel were accomplices, not friends, a king didn't have something as weak as friends.) District four's usual heat and humidity licked shine onto the back of his neck with the pavement heating his feet like a microwave. He felt like ass - he felt like eating. And, importantly enough, he did not feel like running.

But most importantly, he would not lose.
