BEACH VOLLEYBALL: ROUND 1

Welcome to the Beach Volleyball event of the second Panem Olympic Games! The court is located on the beach in District Four, with stands for spectators traveling from Districts One, Two, Four, and the Capitol to watch the competitors. Television cameras are set up around as well, to broadcast the event to anyone staying home as well as to the other districts who aren't as lucky and competent as you all! Please be sure you stretch and warm up with your coaches before you're called to the court, and remember, make your district proud!

Beach volleyball is a tournament, following a bracket. Each player has been assigned a team and a round one match. In THIS THREAD, everyone involved in this tournament should post the following dice code THREE TIMES after roleplaying their character's preparation and start of the match: [*roll range=1-7] without the asterisk. Once everyone involved in your match has done so (i.e., all four players) your points and your teammate's points will be added up for each set, and the team with the highest score wins that set. That score will be the number of points MORE you scored than your opponent in that set. Whoever wins the majority of the three sets wins the match Please remember, beach volleyball goes to 21 points. (We're pretending that the final set goes to 21 as well, and not 15)

Here's an example:

Teams: Doe/Sue vs. Stu/Smith

Set 1:
Doe rolls a 4
Sue rolls a 6
Stu rolls a 7
Smith rolls a 1

The team of Doe/Sue has a higher added score, so they win the set by their total, 10 points, meaning the score was 21-11. This process will repeat for the following two sets. If Doe/Sue win another set, then they have won the majority and the match. However, if Stu/Smith win the next two, they win the match.

All beach volleyball players should post their rolls in this thread; there will not be separate threads for each match. After it is determined who wins the match, then feel free to edit your post roleplaying out the match and winning/losing if you wish.

Nagisa buried his toes into the sand and smiled at his teammate. Despite his wanting to be paired with Gou or Makoto in the same event, he was pleased with how things turned out. His teammate was a girl named Basil, who liked to be called “Bubbles” due to her bubbly personality. Whoever had granted her the nickname wasn’t wrong; she and Nagisa had clashed well upon meeting one another, and he was excited to be her partner in beach volleyball.

”Are you ready, Bubbles?” he said, beaming like a ray of sunshine as the other team wandered to the opposite side of the net. He was not as mentally invested in this as he had been in his first swimming event; swimming was his passion, after all, and this was mainly just for fun.

That didn’’t mean he wouldn’t try hard, though. He was determined to win just so he could face off with Makoto and Gou.

Plus, he couldn’t let Bubbles down. They had practiced together for this.

Elliot wasn't one to hate people who were good at what they do, but Elliot was going to do what he does. He was going to hate his partner. She was a Blackmore and he was a Birch and he never wanted to get paired with a Blackmore. Sure, they are from the same district, but he hated them more than anyone else. They were the reason he was losing, they brought bad luck with them and that's all Elliot could think of. They were the reason he sucked. They were the reason he was failing. HIs partner was a girl a bit younger than him and that made it even worse. He rolled his eyes as they stepped onto the field. He spoke, "I swear, if you Blackmore mess this up, I'll kick your ass afterwards. we're going against the District 4's they may have just won, but District 2 will always be better. And, watch out for Gou, I heard she took down Leo Pine, the big tough guy in like nothing flat. "

Elliot walked onto the field, and prepared to serve the volleyball. The District 4 were on their home field. They had an advantage, but Elliot was a very good sports player, even if most people don't know about it. He doesn't do sports, he trains, but when he was a bit younger he tried a few sports and actually liked volleyball, even if it wasn't as violent at some of the other events. He just was ready to start the game. He nodded at Abbie, hoping she was ready to play. It was going to be a long and tedious game, but he was ready.

Jake was ready with his partner from... ugh... district two. He wasn't happy he was with someone from another district but he supposed he would have to do that in the games to survive. The Olympics were his form of preparation for the games. He knew that if he couldn't hit a ball around well enough, could he use a spear?

He got ready, and then a timer started, and then it started. And Jack started bumping the little ball around like he was supposed to.

I buried my toes into the sand, my feet loving the feeling on the small grains against the skin. A smile was painted across my face as I give a small sideways glance and Gou. My smiles widens because I know what is going though her mind right now, I know that she is looking at them, looking at them all. Relaxing for a moment I call out to her, my voice as kind and as encouraging as ever: "Lets give it our best, Gou!"

The team we are versing steps onto the court and I smile at them, and wish them a small good luck. We could do this. Gou and I could beat them and then we could come home with a medal, which was identical to Nagisa's. The thought makes me smile and I get ready, my body tensing and waiting for the game to begin.

Gou and I had trained hard for this, among swimming, we had found time to practice, time for fall in sync with each other. We had worked hard and we had had fun- wasn't that was this was all really about? "Lets get them." I hype, my eyes focusing on the ball.

Being here again was a wonder, the crowd surrounded her with their cheers and their encouragement until she nearly floated in on their words. Her partner was just exiting the change room - it had been a little awkward due to the fact that he was a guy, but he had been polite enough about it. Now they were ready for the game. She gazed around in wonder as she noticed that this time the crowds were even bigger. Memories of the last Olympics rose to her mind. They were somewhat blurry but the thrill of them still held, even now. She had done well in the gymnastics, though it was yet to happen this time around and she wondered if she was out of practice. Most likely, but it would be fine. She would use the volleyball as a warm up to make herself regain her flexibility.

Her partner - his name was something like "magic fireball" or something, she had settled on Magic as a nickname, if it wasn't his actual name, which seemed to be okay for the both of them - was a pretty attractive guy, but she had the feeling nothing would come of this pairing. After all, she didn't really feel anything for the guy except an expectation that he tried his best. She didn't care if they won, but she didn't want to be on the same team as someone who didn't try. It was her duty as his partner to encourage him and let him know that he was valued, at least by her. She had tried her best to do that so far but she wasn't sure how well it had come off, it was hard when she was as shy as she was. The only thing that really drew her out of her shell at all was the Olympics.

The whistle blew and the ball was served. She slid into a better stance as she watched closely. This was her place, here and on the gymnastics mat. If only she could stay here forever.

Another event. Another one I qualified for. I don't know how it happened, but I did it. And now I must go out and shine. I must be on top of things for my team. I feel like people would put me down because I'm not normal enough for them, but this is my time. I want to hear the crowd chanting my name as I hit the ball around over a net and stuff. I wait until it's time, and when we're announced, I put my bravest face on as possible. I march out onto the playing field. I'm excited for this. It's time to begin.

Still exhilarated from her silver medal win in the hundred meter freestyle swimming, Katrina had slept well and gotten to the volleyball court almost as soon as the time had been announced, having read the bracket in seconds. A match up with a mixed team from district one and two? When Katrina had found that out, she couldn't help but snort derisively. How on earth would her opponents expect to function as a team? Her own partner was a boy from district four, and thus, a much better match for playing beach volleyball. Honestly, seeing as how she was from the only district to actually have a beach, there was really no contest. Nodding to her teammate, Katrina got into the proper stance, and shot the other team a fierce smile. "You ready to kick some ass Bo?" she practically shouted. "Let's show them what district four is made of!"

When the whispers of a second Olympics began to flicker through the Blackmore house, I couldn’t have been more willing to throw myself forward at the notion of getting to leave the confines of district two, even if it was only for a short period of time, and besides, if I picked up a few medals along the way, it’d be an added bonus. They’d certainly be a golden permission for bragging rights, and that was something I desperately needed validated.

I hadn’t been given much to work with, only three events over a range of multiple days, and furthermore I had to sit out through the entirety of the first day’s celebrations. But no matter, I had been given multiple chances to size up those who were around, talking to those who could be considered acquaintances and nothing more, and those who were—well, you get where I’m going.

I had expected a lot, considering we were supposed to be best of the best, however, I hadn’t expected my partner to be from the rival family of district two, and that, that was the icing on the cake. Though “Oh, you can’t be serious!” was what made itself heard when he came strutting up, much more colorful thoughts had flickered through and remained unspoken.

“I swear, if you Blackmore mess this up, I’ll kick your ass afterward. We’re going against the district four’s, and they may have just won, but district two will always be better. And watch out for Gou, I heard she took down Leo Pine, the big, tough guy, in like nothing flat.”

I roll my eyes as I cross my arms against my chest, “Ah, the Birches, charming as always. And besides, I truly believe that if one of us is going to screw this up, it’ll most likely be you.”

The disappointment at her loss had begun to fade by the time she made it to the court. Makoto, the Makoto she knew was going to be her partner. Being his manager, she saw it as her duty to know his characteristics, what encouraged him and discouraged him. Gou knew these things anyway, after all he was her friend. "I can't believe this." her voice bubbled with poorly concealed excitement. She refused to let a loss get her down, refused to be too hard on herself when there was nothing she could do to change it. Giving up wasn't an option. "Makoto we're going to do this." The sun was hot against her exposed abdomen, the seas giving off an enticing salty scent as the waves lapped at sandy shores. That was where she and Makoto had the upper hand, she remembered. They'd grown up along these shores, feet sinking into the sand since they'd taken their first steps.

"Let's give it our best Gou." It's Kou. She doesn't bother correcting him, her heart is beating too fast to do anything more than nod, auburn locks bouncing about her shoulders. "Let's get them."

The ball approached and she sets her stance, arms pushed out in front of her like she'd done so many times on lazy weekends with her friends.

He was ready.

Oh, was he ready.

His night had been spent tossing and turning in his bed, chewed through nails and anxious smiles being the only way to pass the time. And in the morning, when the Sun rocketed up through the sky and it's rays shot through his eyelids (at one point or another he'd slipped into shutdown mode, probably from the amount of sugar he'd taken to stay awake wearing off), he'd quite literally jumped out of bed with about as much gracefulness as Tempest whatever her name was's dives (he'd hit the ground with a thud, and although there was a dull pain in his ankle he'd managed to push it to the back of his mind like everything else). This was Beach Volleyball, with the emphasis being on the beach. And so as the sand dug and tumbled it's way through his toes as he stepped onto the court a devilishly cocky grin slipped across his face. This was their territory, District Four, the beach. And they'd be damned if they didn't defend it. "Hell yeah i'm ready, the question is are they?"He grinned again, clutching the ball between his hands.

"District Four is made of victory, I think the 67th proves it."

Beaches, beaches. And these bitches.

Beach volleyball, perhaps on of the most biased land based games towards District 4. Surely the Capitol is trying give District 4 another victory, because all the swimming events are going to be a blow out for the other two career districts. I know that its unlikely that my team can beat the two kids from District 4, especially if they have been training for years on the beach. As I step onto court, I enjoy the grittiness of the pale sand beneath my feet, it squeezes between my toes.

This particular surface is unusual to me, sure to cause me a lot of problems in this match. I look at my partner in adopted disgust, a Blackmore, part of the rival family. I have been trained to hate these people for what reasons I am unsure, but I must now learn to work with them. I grind my teeth, to keep up the appearance that I really hate this girl. In reality, I have no clue what the Blackmores did to my family.

"Alright, lets get this over with."

And I try to learn how to play this damned game. The ball is larger then anything I've worked with and lighter then a medicine ball. I struggle to serve but I try anyway.

BASIL 'BUBBLES' ARTOIS

The warm sun and the familiar salty air welcomed me as I stepped onto the court. It was a beautiful day for this event and I couldn't have been happier with who my partner ended up being. I've seen Nagisa around the district here and there but our paths never crossed until now. It's almost uncanny how well we've gotten along so far and I'm most pleased with some of the plays we've come up with. Almost positive that we can outsmart this other team, I ready myself while sinking my toes into the sand and stretching down to touch my toes.

"Are you ready, Bubbles?"

Nagisa beams towards me. I could tell we were both very laid back about this particular event, my mind still wandering to how I'll prepare for the gymnastics event. But I think our team chemistry is enough to push us through the next round and why not go for gold? I pick myself back up from my stretched stance and return his smile with one that matches in cheerfulness.

"For sure! We've got this, Nagi. Let's make our district proud!"

If anyone out there is keeping score for the event of Olympic Nervous Puking, then I've got your gold medalist right here.

From District Four! He's the legendary white whale catcher of Libertine legend and abuser of post-it notes, with the megawatt grin that revolutionizes everything you ever thought you knew about electricity! Some people call him the talented Mr. Ripley and other people just call him that F*%$ING GOD&!*$ SON OF A *&#^#& *&#$*&%$ GRAVE ROBBER AND YOU BETTER BELIEVE THAT IF I EVER GET MY HANDS ON THAT RIPLEY *&@q^$#(&$ I'M GOING TO @*&#^@*&# @*&#^*&# &%$#%$%^ AND @*^&#%@*#&^ *&^%&^ AND EVERYONE WILL APPLAUD. %@$#ING YEAH! While everyone else spent their morning having breakfast or maybe getting a last round of practice in, I was hugging my toilet and crying to the almighty porcelain god to forgive me for my sins and release me back to the world of mortal men and normal excitement. In the weeks leading up to the Olympics, I don't remember feeling so terrified, but there are cameras here everywhere and —

— and I'm not sure when the nerves kicked in or when I finally managed to calm myself enough to wash up and make it down to the beach for today's competition, but my left hand is still shaking ever so slightly. No one can tell though. Yep. I am definitely the master of playing it cool.
