Stand tall, for that's all you've ever known. Six-foot four with muscles sculpted by an artisan, you know you've got the looks for the job. What's even better is that you have the talent. You're fair, kind, strong, talented with a spear. Some look at you with envy as you walk past, your father's hand on your shoulders as he laughs along with you, your mother and six siblings trailing not too far behind. You are the oldest of the bunch, and the one they hope will lead them to victory.
That's all you've ever wanted, really. From the day you started training all you could picture was sitting up on that stage with the crown on top of your head, returning home to see your family shouting and cheering, the entire district knowing that you've done the near impossible. You've worked your ass off all your life, knowing that this may not even happen - you might not even ever get reaped - but it can never hurt to dream. And as you grow older it gets closer and closer to your grasp. All you have to do is grab it by the horns and triumph over it.
So then why do you hesitate each year, when someone volunteers? Because next year's your year? What makes you so determined to win yet so lackluster in your attempts to actually go out and do so? You've had the chance, and sometimes not even you know why you don't raise your hand and shout "I volunteer".
It's times like this when you force the thoughts towards the back of your brain and go to wrestling practice, thoughts of glory entrenching your brain.
